S———$—$—$—$— —— rrr THE NOE MURDER. IMPORTANT EVIDENCE AGAINST DOLAN—HIS GUILT ESTABLISHED BEYOND DOUBT. ‘The web of evidenve fastening the murder of Mr. Noe upon the prisoner Dolan is gradually tightening around him, sa matter of course he still protests his inno- ‘cence, but the evidence slowly but surely being col- Jected against him points to bis guilt, Yesterday an important witness gave information to the police, which, if true, seals the prisoner’s doom, ‘The name of the witness is Mary Reed. She is twenty years of age and has been on terms of intymacy with Dolan. She was arrested at a late hour on Sunday night by detectives Dorsey and Kealy, on in- formation received to the effect that she had important knowledge of the crime, When taken into custody she denied all knowledge of the murder, but soon admitted ‘ber intimacy with Dolan and her knowledge of certain spicious circumstances with relation to his conduct subsequent to the tragedy. The following is substantially the story told by Mary Reed:— ‘THE MISTRESS STORY. On Sunday morning, August 22 (the day of the mar- der), at about six o'clock, Dolan, having been out all might, called at the residence of the witness, No. 43 Bowery, where he remained a few minutes. He was dressed’at the timo in a dark gray coat and vest and Aight gray pantaloons. He returned to the house about three or rr hours later—between nine and ten ‘o'clock. After being inside a short time he took from his pocket a black pocketbook and gave her $2 from it. His coat was buttoned closely across his shirt Dosom, evidently for the pr of concealing his shirt. There was a scratch on his face which looked as af it had been very recently inflicted. It was not there when he left the house at six o'clock. She asked him howhe came by the scratch. He replied that he had done 1t accidentally with his nails. She also asked him where he had obtained his money. He answered that he had made a and cautioned her to say nothing about it’ After some further con- ‘versation Dolan said that he was going to the house of his mother to change his shirt, and took his departure. At twelve o'clock noon he came back. His clothing had been changed. Instead of the dark gray coat and “west and light gray pantaloo which he had on when he left, he wore a blue flannel coat and pantaloons and a white vest. He had been in the house only a little ‘while when he took out the black pocketbook before mentioned, and commenced to count over some Dilis, amongwhich his companion saw some $5 and $10 notes. How many she conid not say. He afterward remarked that he had $45, The pock- etbook he hid away in acloset, Again he cautioned ther to tell nobody that he had any money. Dolan re- mained with Mary Reed until nine o'clock on Monday x when he left the house. In the course of investigation the detectives found sanother young woman, by the name of Maggie Casey, alsoa friend of the prisoner's, who stated that Dolan ‘had said to her a few weeks ago tat Mary Reed knew gomething about him which, if divulged, would make Dim fly from the etty. The story told by Mary Reed fully corroborates the ‘theory ‘of Dolan’s guilt. The clothing wern by Dolan Previous to his leaving No. 43 Bowery just before the Jnurder exactly tallies with the description of the (Clothing worn by the murderer as given by Mr. Noe. The concealing of his shirt, which was undoubtedly ‘torn and bloody, and his changing his clothing, are other highly suspicious circumstances, and the sudden display of money forms another link in the chain of evidence that so tightly encircles the prisoner. Mary Reed was, after ner confession, taken before ‘the District Attorney, who committed her to the House of Detention, to be used as a witness in the trial. The police authorities express themselves as satisfied ‘Deyond doubi that Dolan is the murderer. A BRITISH SCHOONER LOST. By the bark Northern Queen, of Yarmouth, N. S., ‘Captain Daler, news has come of the abandonment at sea of the British schooner Sophia & Emily She Welonged to Aberystwith, in North Wales, and was car- rying a cargo of salt from Lisbon to Halifax, Captain Jenkins, of the Sophia & Emily, states that he sailed from Lisbon in August; had variable weather until September 19, when they wore struck by a hurricane, On the 20th of September they fell in with the Northern Queen. The crew, only five in number, were quite exhausted with pumping. ‘Their vessel was abandoned in latitude 43 deg. 30 min. Jongitude 54 degs.
