INANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Generally Lower—The Sit- uation Discouraging. RAG MONEY WORTH 85.84 Gold Opened at 117 and Closed at 116 1-2— Money on Call Firmer—Government and Railway Bonds in Pair Demand. Wat S Pawar, Oct 80 M. A Wall street broker to-day aptly described the exist- ing situation when he said:—‘This market is poor be- cause it is controlled almost entirely by the class which I represent. A few months ago we could live moderately well—not so luxuriously, it is true, as during the years immediately succeeding the war—but we could meet the expenses both of our offices and homes, We had an outside following, and the commissions received were a, fair and encouraging compensation, Now, however, the clr- cumstances are changed, Where there wero formerly twenty customers to one broker there are now twenty brokers to one customer. What is the consequence? In order to make both ends meet we are compelled to trade among ourselves and every decline brings out long stock. Millions a1 awaiting an oppor- tunity to realize, Capital is every hour grow- ing more sensitive, and no one can tell where ‘the declining tendency will stop. Favorite securities are showing unexpected weakness. In order to pay dividends and maintain reputation directors are bor- rowing money which they claim to have earned. Promises are mere bubbles. Falsehood and misrepre- sentation have taken the place of honor, and repeated fleception has driven from the street its best friends, Distrust has been substituted for con- fidence, andthere is not an clement of strength to Induce a renewal of speculation, except with a view to even lower than prevailing prices, Where will it all end? Noman can tell. We aro in an anomalous posi- Vion. ‘The present development of weakness is unpre- vedented and unexpected. The currency question, antil settled, is “a thorn in the flesh.” Governor Bigler tells me that, according to his advices, Dhio will give a republican majority, and, if true, this willsond gold and other securities down, Pennsylvania -will follow, New York may be counted in the same tategory. What are you to expect? No, sir, I'm nota ull”? While there are several SALIENT PACTS ‘umbodied in the foregoing sententious utterances of a broker we should not lose sight of possibilities, We ‘are about entering upon a fall trade. The great crops of tho summer are ready for market. By and by kee will close the water lines and give additional work to the railways, Augmented receipts will natu- sally follow, and these being published to tho specula- tive community will cause a speculative advance in various stocks, There may also be an enlarged employ- ment of capital in stimulating now idle enter- prises. Crops will be moved, productive in austries supported, and national energy be enoouraged. A free circulation of currency thus occa- tioned must exert only a healthful influence. Whether the counteracting influences incident to a period of tontraction can successfully antagonize a law of growth {@ & question to be determined. THE STOCK MARKET. The meeting of the directors of the Atlantic and Pa- cific Company, lessees of the Missouri Pacific, is ad- Jjourned to Tuesday next, when they have invited a con- ference with the large stockholders of the Missouri Pa- ctfic, The coal tonnage over tho Central New Jersey this season is 1,446,000, comparing with 1,953,000 tons to date fast year; the Delaware and Lackawanna 2,523,000 this seagon to 1,788,000 tons to date last year. ‘The decline in Western Union Telegraph was assisted by the news that at Ottawa, IIL, La Salle County Cir- cuit Court, the application of the company for an in- junction to prevent the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company from erecting and operating wires upon the line of poles of the Chicago and Paducah Railroad Com- pany was dented yesterday. In respect to Delaware and Lackawanna, which has suffered considerable decline, it is said that there is nothing which justifies the same, It is claimed, on the contrary, that the net earnings of the company, after paying all leases and obligations of every kind, amount during the eight months ending September 1 to 11.05 per cent on $25,617,000, the share capital of the company. The bonded debt of the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western is $3,103,000, The cash is in bank to. pay the dividend due October 20, and we aro told that the directors of the company, who know most about its affairs, are the largest stockholders. Fripay, Oct, 86 P. M. As a general thing the merchandise markets have shown a steady, gradual improvement during the past week, so that, though some of the most important commodities have been dull and declining all through the week, trade as @ whole may be said to be improv- ing, while the prospect for the future is more prom- ising than it has been at any previons time perhaps. In many departments of trade there has ogen a further shrinkage, and the general tendency. of prices has been and still is toward a lower basis, regardless of the comparatively high ruling of the gold premium. Indeed, the gold premium can no longer be regarded asthe unerring indication it was wont to be, for its ups and downs are appar- ently inexplicable, and they exert next to no in- fluence on the merchandise markets, ‘Tho plentiful supply of nearly all descriptions of merchandise, but especially of those commodities which are generally regarded as the necessaries of life, would seem to preclude the possibility of very high prices, and the general tendency toward a still lower scale of prices, ex- cites no surprise savein a few exceptional cases. The ag- gregate business for the past week is considerably larger than last week in very many articles, though in some the sales have beon disappointing. In the dry goods market a fair movement has been in progress all through the week, and the sales of most of tho large houses have shown a very gratifying increase, On Change business has been somewhat disappointing, especially to those who looked for renewed activity and buoyancy in breadstuffs aud other exportable commodities. Still business has been fair in most ot the leading articles. Flour has been in moderate roquest, but the business done presents a very fair showing nevertheless. Wheat has not mot with the active demand which was genorally expected, and only & moderate business hus transpired’ trom day to adually at the receding prices. ‘orn Tnarket steadily ruling in buyers? favor as met with Tair demand, but the market favored the buyer for tho. mo art, though there occurred no marked decline, and the ot Closed firmer. ste have been without Important che ing and declining, ly according to the whim of a few leading speculators.
