FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Dull and Lower—The Outlook Uncertain. RAG DOLLARS WORTH 85.47. Money on Call Hardening—Gold Opened and Closed at 117—More Failures—Good Bonds Generally Steady, Wat, Srexer, Tuvnspar, Oct. 7—6 P.M. ‘The results of the market to-day were not calculated ‘ strengthen confidence or invite outside business, On he contrary, it wasa generally recognized fact that prices were chiefly sustained by one or two parties who wwe persistently holding a certain line of stocks and en- leavoring to correct the weakness that has been per- wptible for several days. That the efforts of these well- mtentioned individuals are without il and that Igures are responding to causes which are not for the poment within local control is attested by the contrast the closing prices to-day and yesterday. It is, of wurse, impossible to say when the bottom will be wached, but it is safo to observe that until there is sractical evidence of commercial recuperation, until the wrocess of liquidation has ceaged, until this sensitive narket is no longer disturbed by suspicions of impend- ng danger, until investors realize that tho volume of arrency is not to be changed by legislation, until rail- vay corporations resume the publication of their re- wipts and expenditures, until, in brief, the great hhadow that separates the present from the future is tissolved, we shall enjoy no permanent recovery from wiisting depression. THE STOCK MARKET wffords but little material for comment, The transac- fons indicated unusual dulness, The principal deal- mgs were in Lake Shore, Western Union, Missouri Pacific and Pacific Mail In point of interest Missouri facific was the leader, opening at 2334, advancing to 143, then declining to 214, with a close at 22%, The gystery connected with the downward movement of hhis stock will probably be explained in two or three fays. It may be said meanwhile that a bitter feeling wists among those who were once its strongest sup- porters, and that nota few victims are clamorous for m investigation. Lake Shore was supported, 1t is Mleged, by a single operator, and to the steadiness of hhis stock is ascribed the ability of the general market to resist pressure. The sales were at 541% a 54% a 5434, with a close at 5434. Pacific Mail vibrated between 36 $634 0 36%, which was the last price. Union Pacific wold at 612{ a 6234 a 61%, Western Union was com- paratively steady at 764 and ended at 757¢ a 75}, Atlanticand Pacific Railroad preferred declined to 575, wut closed at 6 bid. No official statement has yet ween made concerning the financial condition of fhe company, although the samo was ex jected from a meeting of the directors to-day. Te Chicago and Rock Island earnings for August show an increase of $20,000 over last year. the stock market closed up firm, except for New Jer- yey Central, Delaware, Lackawanna and Western and Michigan Central. New Jersey Central was especially weak, and dropped to 10034, adecline of 43¢ per cent for the day. Delaware, Lackawanna and Western de Hlined from 11834 to 117%, and closed at 117%. Mich- gan Central fell off from 574g to 5654. The decline in these stocks attracted attention, and yet it is impossi- ‘le to give a reason therefor, because officiais are reti- tent, and the figures connected with these operations are thus far incomplete. Private advices from Toledo, where the directors and stockholders of Wabash are in songultation, are indicative of a substantial change for ‘he better. It is yet too early to discuss the amend- ments that are now under consideration, but the stock- solders profess to feel much confidence in the efforts of Wr. Ashley, who is their appointed representative, and m this capacity is endeavoring to reconcile conflicting @teresta and replace the road upon its former footing. REVENUE 4 SCEIPTS. Internal Revenue Commissioner Pratt has begun writing his annual report, and expects to make a grati- fying exhibit of the work accomplished the last year. For the first three months the internal revenue receipts show an increase of about $2,000,000, compared with last year, and the Commissioner estimates that the receipts for the entire year will amount to about $120,000,000, or $10,000,000 more than last year. This increase will be due mainly to the breaking up of the whiskey ring, and the additional tax upon whiskey and tobacco. ‘THE FOREIGN MARKET, London despatches report a quict market, with but litte change in prices.
