4 day, 6th inst., at three P.M. ‘invited, BRUTALITY AT “THE ISLAND.” Aman, giving his name as William Warren, informed @ Huravp reporter last night that, having been sen- tenced on September 4, in the Court of Special Sessions, to the Blackwell's Island Penitentiary for one month, he suffered most brutal treatment at the hands of a keeper. According to his story he went three days be- fore his time was out to the keeper to ask him if ho could see the Warden, to which the reply was made, “7 break your head with a club, you —~.” The convict’ then turned round, and, in @ fow moments after, the keeper strack him under the ear with an iron key, and knocked him down. In full- ing he struck his head against one of the steps and re- mained senseless for ten minutes. As he fell the keeper raised his club to strike him ‘in; but Wai the head keeper, said;—‘My God, that will do ‘ill him.” He was taken to his cell and he doctor sent for. On the same day the convicts in the shoo shop re- fused to work under the same keeper. The man admitted that he had served terms both in Sing Sing and Jersey and made no secret whatever of his previous life. is appearance clearly showed that. he had been vory badly Wanaied but whether or not by those at whose door he lays the ill-treatment is a ques- ‘bon that can be answered by the Commissioners, DARING ROBBERY BY A YOUTH. Yesterday morning a lad named David Rickert, re- siding on Jersey City Heights, was arrested by Officer Bronings at the Sinciair House, Hoboken, on a charge of robbery proferred by a Mr. Zabriskie, who was in company with him for some time in said place. Rick. ert at a favorable opportunity snatched from him a gold watch and chain valued at $200. ‘These were found in his possession after his capture. The accused, who is only 18 years of age, was arraigned before Recorder Bohnstedt and committed in detault of bail to the county jail to await the action of the Grand Jury, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS.
