12 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Stocks Heavy and Lower—A Want of Confidence. GOLD FIRM AT 117 1-4. ‘The Bank Statement—Money Without Change— Investment Securities Steady. Wau. Sree, Sarcrpay, Oct, 2—6 P.M. ‘The stock market to-day, after an exhibition of con- siderable firmness in the early hours, closed weak and frregular. There were no important rumors, and we iscover nothing that should operate as a depressing in- uence save the dead weight which certain parties are attempting to carry, and the carrying of which only entails loss. Suspicion was expressed toward the close of the market that trouble might be caused both in Boston and Montreal by the failure of Shephard, Hall & Co., lumber merchants. We learn, however, from the latter city that while they have a large amount of paper at discount there in two or three local banks it is all well secured, and that no loss to the banks will re- sult, Advices from Boston and conference with parties ‘who are identified with Boston interests are likewiso essuring THE STOCK MARKET. ‘The sales to day indicated less than usual activity. Im business Lake Shore was the leader. Tho opening price was 5434 and the closing price $324, with transac- tions meanwhile at 54%. Pacific Mail sold at 874 a 8734 and 96% at the close.
