\y ——<$_—___—_. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Events of the Week—A Dull and Feature- less Stock Market, THE MOVEMENT OF GOLD Advance in Government Bonds—Strength of Good Railroad Bonds—Money Easy and Abundant—Poreign Exchange Weak. Wau Stren, } Sunpay, Sept. 26, 1875. The week just closed presents few features that need pass in review. Dulness was the prevatling condition, and the transactions in stocks were confined princi, pally to the Aabitués of brokers’ officers.and to local Operators. An early decline was made, ranging from L to 4 per cent.; but later a rally occurred, and the market ended with a recovery of from % to 13 por vent, The cause of depression, the influences that pre- vent successful speculation and the distrust that exists, have been described too often to require further allu- gion at this time. Many are hoping that with the re- vivalof attumn tradea substantial change for the better will occur in the department of stocks, but whilo railways ‘surround themselves with mystery and re- fuse to publish their receipts and expeditures except for the benoft of directors and favored friends, and while non-dividend paying securities cohtinue to drift downwurds with all the symptoms of a dry rot, it 4s tobe doubted whether any improvement will produce *asympathetic effect upon other than the stocks that ‘have heretofore been firmly held and strongly supported, The chief depression was exhibited in Olio and Missis- sippi, Pacific Mail, Hannibal and St. Joseph, Erie, Lake Shore and Western Upion. Northwestern shares were “exceptionally firm and apparently resisted influences that were brought to bear upon several Western securi ties, The range was only between 303¢ and 38%, and the close was 294. Erie declined from 20 to 1634, and ‘the preferred from 353g to 32%. The former ended at 1744. Western Union sold, ex dividend, at 75%, but Amproved to 764 on rumors of a favorable forthcoming weport, Lake Shore was purchased freely, notwith- ‘standing the accepted fact tiat the company will not earn a dividend this: year. The increase in price is due to the prospects of a better business after the closing of ‘canal navigation. The extremes were 55 and 623%, with ‘the final quotation at. 53%. Paciflc Mail sold at 36% ‘and down to 33%, with a close at 3544. Sundry rumors were In circulation concerning this company; but, like their predecessors, they were evidently started for stock fobbing purposes. Missouri Pacific sold at 4734 a 453¢; Union Pacific at 7134707034. The other changes “were unimportant. MIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES. The foreign commerce of the port for the week was as ollows:—General merchandise imports, including dry goods, $6,292,249; produce exports, $4,620,232; and specie exports, $280,345, The total imports of mer- chandise sinco January 1, this year, amount to $252,140,957, against $302,940,607 for the corresponding period in 1874, and $308,207,676 in 1873, The total ex- ports of produce amount to $181,342,387, against $208, 673,287 in 1874 and $212,710,745 in 1873. ‘Exports of specie since January 1 amount to $62,506,517, against $43,117,416 in 1874 and $40,851,161 in 1973, ‘THE MONEY MARKET, There were no disturbing influences in this depart- ment, Early in the week the tendency was to firmer ‘cates on call loans, but toward the close the supply was #0 abundant that it was difficult to find employment for tapital at 1}g and 24¢ per cent. There was ‘rather more inquiry for discounts and the principal busi- ness was at 6 a7 per cent for prime names. Yhe foreign exchanges were depressed early in the week, but subsequently a firmer tone prevailed on the easier condition of cash gold. The improvement was aot fully maintained at the close, The Syndicat ‘bankers are said not vo bave been sellers since the price declined below 48455. Kegular trade continues to be embarrassed by the unsettied state of private credits and the expectation of further failures, In prices there has been oo particular change since last week, Both buyers and sellers are operating cautiously. It is generally believed that business will run along later into the season than usual. If the Fall River mills should reopen to-morrow it will, doubtless, infuse more tifo into the market for cotton, although it may not produce any change in the figures of the same, The tailure of Kattingill & Campbell, reported by the cable, isdenied. The bank statement of the week shows a toss of $623,250 in the excess of reserve above legal Tequirementa. The decrease of legal tenders was $616,000, and is explained by the demand from the West and South for ¢he movement oi crops. The de- crease in specte was only $117,000, THE GOLD MARKET -has been without feature, The extremes of the week are 117% and 16, the latter price being established on the expectation that the Secretary of the Treasury would sel) a iarger amount of gold than was named in the monthiy schedule, In this, however, the brokers Were disappuruied, and the figures advanced to 116%, closing at 1l#'g. The amount sold on Thursday by the government was $500,000, the bids tor which aggre- gated $2,245,000. On gold loans the rates were as high early in the week at 832 per diem, but later they be- tame easter, receding to 1.32 and 1.64 per diem. The customs receipts for the month were $8,085,000. The price of currency in gold has ranged trom 86,02 to 86,29, COIN AND BELLIO: The following were the last quotations in gold for coin and bullion: — wil eset St Peck Buying, Selling. The following figures, compiled from the report of the Bureau of Statistics, show the exports and imports of the whole United States for the month of July, 1876, compared with the same month in 1874. There has been very little movement in Southern State bonds, and sales at the Board have been near a minimum, A few transactions in North Carolina special tax bonds were made at 8 a 3% and Georgia gold sevens gold at 100, Virginia advices from private par- ties are favorable, and speak hopefully of provisions being made to pay interest as it matures, Railroad bonds have been reasonably active, and the prices of the best bonds well maintained; Central Pa- cifics have sold up to 105, and Union Pacific first mort- gage at 103. If the money market continues as easy throughout the autumn as many now anticipate, it is natural to suppose that the demand for the higher classes of railroad bonds will be more active than usual at this season, as the lack of employment for money at profitable rates leaves an accumulation to seek Invest- ment in the best class of bonds, paying a fair rate of interest, Daily closing prices of a few leading bonds have been as follows :— Wed. The latter underwent fluctuations similar to those which were observable in our own market, but closed with a firmer undertone, ‘The bank rate is unchanged, remaining at 2 per cent. The per centage of reserve is about 52% as against 6354 the week before, Considerable anxiety is reported in financial circles over the attitude of Russia in the Ser~ vian question. The said steam- ship left Glasgow on the 4th, and Moville on the 5th inst, with 322 passengers. Considerable anxiety ex- isted in this city on account of her protracted non- arrival, it being known that she was the fastest boat of the Anchor line; but this was allayed some seven days ago when news was received in New York that she had beon spoken in mid Atlantic, by the Dutch steamship Maas, in a disabled condition and repairing her machin- ery to proceed to this port. On Saturday last she was again spoken at sea by the Inman steamer City of.| Berlin and reported to be about a day's voyage froin New York. Yesterday afternoon a HxRAL» roporter went on board the said steamship, she having arrived | in the meanwhile, to learn the history of her vicissi- tudes. The chit engineer, Mr. James Murray , told the | following story :— ‘We left Glasgow on tho 4th inst., bound for this port. On the 11th of September the shaft broke at about 100 feet from the screw, We bored one four-inch hole through the break of the shaft and indented four steel drivers flash with the shaft, covermg the drivers with cast-iron clamps, or glands, At the time the Bhatt broke it bent two lengths of the same shafting, one of the couplings giving the shaft an eccentric form of two inches. The bent shaft was as difficult a case to dispose of as the break in the shaft, as far as ingenuity went to repair it, The great difliculty in the break its shortness, the splinters being only twenty es long, and’ the diameter of the shaft twenty inches, On the 19th of September, ay a laboring wit! our entire staff of seven engineers and night, we were able to proceed under steam, Cita wesicieed at twenty-one revolutions a mipate, and thep by do- grees got up to thirty revolutions a minute, proceeding at seven knots an hour. While the ropairing was tak. | ing place we were becalmed tor a couple of days and | The accident , drifting away to happened 1,576 the southward. miles from the Irish We have "been twenty-one days on the trip. Where the shaft broke it appeared to me as if there were two qualities of tron, Previous to this we have bad a similar accident ou the Ethiopia Thanks to the captain, every effort was made by the aid of canvas to accelerate our voyage here, The Anchor steamers are always well provisioned, and so the passengers had plenty to eat and drink, "None of them felt any fear. We came on here at about seven knots an hour, and arrived at Sandy Hook last night, and at our dock early this morning. The passenge went ashore early this morning. 1 cannot tell you what repairs will be effected to our sbatt while in this city, but we are to sail next Saturday. The Ethiopia is the quickest boat in our line, and has made the run from Moville, in Ireland, tot his portundercight days, I must not forget to tell you that our passengers presented a highly complimentary and deserved set of resolutions to Captain Craig for the excellent seamanship he had displayed, A survey will be held shortly to decide whether we can return home as we are, or whether we must have a new section of shaft inserted.” ANOTHER POST ‘The Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Company improved coast. | yesterday by erecting in Park row some gigantic poles for their own use and the inconvemence of the pubhe, One on the northeast corner of the sidewalk, belonging ig fifty feet in heignt, three feet of it being buried in the ground, inches in diameter at the base, and sustains forty-one wires. One nearly opposite js of the sume propor. tions, The most singular pole in reference to the establishment of these additional nuisances in an already obstrocted thoroughfare is that advantage was taken of the absence of the Post Office authorities on a Sunday to dig up a portion of a sidewalk appertaini to a government building and coolly erect thereon such an impediment to travel, utterly ignoring the rights of ownership and obtaining possession of the ground without even the faintest pretence of asking permis- ion for its occupation, The Post Office people present the building yesterday were deckdediy of the opinion that the toleg: be pole in question will have to be re- moved forthwith uniess consent lor 1 rewention can be procured, MARBLE MANTELS.
