FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Irregular and Lower. GOLD 16 3-8 A 117 A U6 7-8. Money on Call 2 and 3 Per Cent—Good Invest- ment Securities Firm—Foreign Exchange Steady, Warr, Stuer, } Turspay, Sept, 4—6 P.M. There were rumors to-day of an important failure in the sugar business, but nothing has occurred since the close of the market that justifies a mention of names or the comments that should follow. The stock mar- ket was excited, A distrustful fébling exists and a con- siderable short interest has been created in the expeo- tation of lower prices, It is not improbable, however, that a sharp turn may be made at an early day. The constituency of the leading ‘operators is limited, and it is within the management of those who aro fixing figures to suit themselves. Earnest endeavors are being made by the President and other officials of the Stock Exchange to discover the guilty parties who have recently circulated rumors to the detriment of good business houses, but thus far they are without avail. The motive is a good one, but capital just now is ex- tremely sensitive, ang its sentinels are not always close-mouthed when they find paper refused in the discount market, They will speak, in spite of the rules of the Stock Exchange. THE PORKIGN MARKER, A special despatch to the Evening Telegram says “At the opening of business to-day the chief feature in the American department of the market was the ex treme dulness which prevailed in Erie Railway shares. The recent marked decline is consequent upon the New York quotations, and the shares were also affected by the announcement of the failure of the banking firm of Schuchardt & Co., of your city, We anticipate no fall in the general markets bere, the disturbing influences being confined alone wo Erie, and the decline in American exchange has bad no apparent effect as yet. Console are firmer and have advanced iy per cent, the price for them now being @4)g. The shares of the Pennsylvania Railroad have recovered & portion of what they lost yesterday. They have ad vanced \ per cent, and are now queted at 44X. The shares of the Reading Railroad have alse advanced iy per cont, the price for them now being 50%. There le but little inquiry for money, and borrowers have no difficulty in obtaining all they want on prime cob laterals, The current rate for best paper in the open discount market is 1% per cent, or 3% per cent below the Bank of England rate, The market for Erie shares has remained dull all day, and further decline in them is noted of % percent, They are now quoted at 16%. The market for United States government bonds is steady, and an advance of 1-16 por cent is recorded im new fives, their price now being 105 1-16," THE LATEST QUOTATIONS. Mond: Consols.
