THE NAVY. MOST OF THE OF¥ICERS ASHORE—HOW THEY ARE EMPLOYED—-LIST OF OFFICERS ON SPECIAL SERVICE-—-CHANGES IN STATIONS OF V£SSELS—-RESIGNATIONS, DEATHS AND RETIRE- MENTS. One of the remarkable features of our naval service is that the majority of the officers are usually ashore. At the present time, as appears by the semi-annual “Navy Register,” just published, out of 1,616 officers, of all grades, on what is termed the “active list’” line officers, 681 staff officers, 201 warrant officers and 51 mates—only 712 are on sea service, including those on duty on tugs and on the Coast Survey. The secords of the most prominent oflicers—the fourteen sdmirals—show that their average service is forty-five years and four months, of which un average of twenty-three years and six mouths Was spent afloat. Admiral Almy has the longest sea tecord of any officer on the active list, having spent éwenty-seven years and one month at sea, out of # ser- vice of forty-six years and eight months. Next comes Admiral John Rodgers, with twenty-six and a quar- ter years’ sea service, out of forty-seven years and five months, he third on the list of “old salts’ is the Junior Rear Admiral, Stephen D. Trenchard, whose total sea service is twenty-six years, out of forty years’ rervice, The Admiral with the lowest sea record Is Reed Werden—seventeen years and eight months— while the hero of the Monitor, familiarly known as “Jack” Worden, has been at sea nineteen years and three months since he entered the service in 1834. In the case of the latter gallant Admiral it is noticeable that, while his Monitor exploit in 1862 eventually car- ried him ahead of many of his seniors, he is now only seven numbers above the position he would have ocet ied if he had never commanded the ‘Yankee cheese- x On a ralt,”? HOW THE OFPICERS ARK EMPLOYED. ‘The Admiral is still reported, somewhat vaguely, as on “special duty, Washington,” there being presuma- bly no other duty to which the preiier naval officer can be appropriately assigned. The Vice Admiral, in his fiftieth year of active service, remains in c af the New York Navy Yard and station, Th mirals are employed as follows, the list of theso otficers having been mogiied by the promotion of Commodores Reed Werden and Stephen D, Trenchard vice Caso re- tired and Collins deceased :— Charles H. Davis, superintendent Naval Observatory, John Rodgers, commandant Mure Island Navy Yard. Alexander M. Ponnock, waitin, orders. John L. Worden, commanding Ei uropean station. John J. Stephen D, Trenchard, waiting orders, Of the twenty-five cotnmodores none are on sca ser- vice, there being no necessity for commodores afloat in the present condition of our navy. Shore duty, how- ever, is provided for seventeen of them, as follows :— Commandants of Navy Yards and Stations—George H. Preble, Thomas H. Patterson, Edward ‘I. Nichols, Thomas If, Stevens, Andrew Bryson, Donald MeN. Fairfax, George H. Cooper. Members of various Bourds—Alexander Murray, John :Guest, J. W. A. Nicholson, Charles H. B. Caldwell, ‘John C. Beaumont and Aaron K. Hughes have been promoted to the rank of commodore since January, the former by special legislation, the latter vice Werden promoted. The (iffy captains are accounted for as follows:— Twenty-two aro in command of vessels, seventeen are bn shore duty, six are waiting orders, four are on leave pf absence and one is under suspension. Commanders Belknap, Harmony, Benham and Irwin have attained she rank of captain, vice Beaumont and Hughes pro- moted and Thornton and Harris deceased. Of the ninety commanders sixty-eight are employed, fourteen waiting orders, four on leave, three sick an ‘one suspended, All but fourteen of the 100 lieutenant commanders are on duty. Those off duty are:—Waiting orders, six; on leave, four; sick, three; and furloughed, one. Of the remaining 502 Iino officers, 119 of them are thus reported:—Ordered home, forty-eight; waiting | orders, forty; on leave, seventeen; sick, eleven; fur- Joughed, two} suspended, one.
