JERSEY CITY FRAUDS, THE VAPOR GASLIGHT SWINDLE—HOW BUMSTED WAS CHEATED OUT OF THIRTY THOUSAND DOLLARS, The Commissioners of Jersey City who are charged with having received seventy-five per cent of the Vapor Gas Company’s stock say they never received a dollay of the stock nor any interest in the contract, No at tempt has been mado, however, to explain the sworm testimony that 18% per cent of the company’s stock was placed in the hands of the brother of one of them, 18% per cent given to the son of another, and 18% per cent to the chosen representative of a third, before tho contract was awarded, and that for this controlling interest in the stock not one cent of consideration was paid. One of those who was presen{ in tho meeting at which these allotments were made was Major = David B. Bridg ford, a well known contractor, and an ex-Confederate officer. When the : former testimony was taken in the proceeding in the New York Superior Court Bridgford was absent in the West. He returned last week, and was subpmnaed by ex-Judgo Rankin, counsel for ‘Walker, who, it will be remembered, is the creditor of Fayette, and who is seeking to recover the seventy-five per cent of stock on the ground that the transfer by Fayette to the Commissioners of Public Works wag fraudulent and void, no consideration having been paid therefor. BRIDGPORD WAS SWORN and examined before Judge Freedman, in the Superior Court, Chambers, on Friday last. He testified, produ ing amemorandum made at the time, that on January 6, 18 Gillette, brother of Commissioner Gillette, and who was prosent with James H. Startup, son of Commissioncr Startup; Major Harris, Michael Nathan, and the wit- ness; that it was there agreed that 18% per cent of the stock of the Fayette Vapor Gas Com. pany was to be transferred to B. W. Gillette, for his brother, President of the Board of Public Works, 18% per cent to James H. Startup for his father, Com- missioner Startup, and 18% per cent to William Robert- son, formerly partner of Commissioner Bumsted, in that gentleman's behalf; that the meeting was regularly organized by B. W. Gillette taking the chair and James H, Startup acting as secretary. Q Is there any doubt in your mind that the transfer of stock by Mr. Fayette to each of the parties you have named was made to them in behalf of Commissionere Gillette, Startup and Bumsted? A. No doubt whatever; I know it; that was the agreement and understanding. The witness further testified that Robertson subse- \ quently declined to hold the stock in Bumsted’s behalf; | that John Soper, a Jersey City sur. suggested ta witness that he would hold it for Bumsted and that wit- ness persuaded Bumsted to consent to this arraigeraa ity that a few days APTER THR PIRST MEETING another was held at Taylor's Hotel, in Jersey City, the same parties, with the exception of Commissioner Gil- lette, being present, and further details were there agreed on; that the next meeting was at the office of a New York lawyer, Commissioner Gillette's brother, Commis- sioner Startup’s son and witnesses being present; he could not say whether the others were present or hot; that the papers were there signed for the permanent or- ganization of the Fayette Vapor Gashght Company, under the laws of the State of New York; that accord: ing to Bumsted’s request Soper, as representing his stock, was made president of the company; that subse- quent meetings were always held at the office of William Startup & Co., No. 161 Chambers street; that witness held his stock for two years and was never allowed any share in the profits, although assured by one of the officers o the company that profits were made, whereupon he sold it to Samuel McBurney, of Jersey City; that he wag presiat on one Sunday evening at the house of James . Startup, in Jersey City, when Commissioner Start ‘was present, and the affairs of the company were talk over. A receiver was appointed by Judge Speir, of the Su- perior Court, on the application of Mr. Rankin, and an injunction order has been served upon the Messrs. Gil- lotte (although their stock was sold some time ago) and the Messrs. Startup and the other stockholders, prohib- iting them from transferring from their possession any of the stock or other interest which Fayette had owned in the company or contract, Walker's counsel, Mr. Rankin, states that Bumste: shortly alter his release from State Prison, inform: lim that Soper had refused to give him the stock which had been placed in his hands to be held for him (Bum- sted), and that others had robbed him im a similar way in his absence, saying, with some feeling, “Men whe wouldn't have had a shirton their backs but for me HAVE ROBBED ME OF NOT LESS THAN THIRTY THOUSAND bd DOLLARS. ”? The holders of Fayette Vapor Gas stock are exceed- ingly wrathy with Fayette for giving such testimony as he did.
