10 NARRAGANSETT GUN. CLUB. THE CHALLENGE PIGEON SHOOTING MATCH FINE SPORT AMID UNFAVORABLE WEATHER— DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMEN PRESENT—MR. GRUND THE WINNER OVER MB. HECKSCHER IN A scone or 30 To 14, Newport, R. 1, August 16, 1875. Great preparations had been made by the resident and transient population of Newport for the sport whieh took place to-day at the grounds of the Narra fansett Gun Club, As in horse racing and yachting, 99 the gun clubs always have their chief or prominent days, and this was one of the good days of tho | year at Middletown, Unfortunately the wea- ther was unpropitious, for. from® midnight of Sunday it seemed as though this place was to be a | centre of the gentle showers which have been so disas- trous elsewhere, at home and abroad. Had the weather been favorable hundreds of gentlemen would have been present, a fact well established by the premium asked on carriages on Sunday evening. While the many were disappointed, however, those who did reach the grounds ‘wore well repaid for the trouble of combating rain and mud. The challenge PIGKON SHOOTING MATCH was to commence at twelve o'clock. The contestants were Mr. J. P. Grund, of Philadelphia, and Mr. J. G. Heckscher, of New York. It a fifty bird match, dis- fange thirty yards, English Miles governing, $2,500 a side. The birds were started from English ground traps, ‘the five traps being in a line and so arranged that none | but the man at the lever knew which trap was to be epened. By noon quite a large company bad assembled, Among tho gentlemen beneath the little tents at the traps were His Excellency Aristarche Bey, Minister Plenipotentiary of the Turkish government at Washing- on; the British Ambassador, Sir Edward Thornton, a companied by his host, Mr. L. P. Morton; the ex-Ministe to Vienna, John Jay; Majors Randolph and MeComb, United States Army, and many others. At ten minutes | past twelve the little tent was crowded, and, as the rain | Bontinued to fall heavily, it was considered useless to felay the match with the hope that it would clear up. Phere was a spirit of impatience manifested, indeed. A TEST BIRD was put into one of the traps for Mr. Grund, who quickly brought it to the ground. This served as an ex- | cellent method for fixing the elevation, and at the samo | time tried the effect of the dull light, Mr. Heckscher flid not take a test for his practice on Saturday wed him capable of killing eighteen out of twenty- Bro birds. ‘In the absence of any Rhode Island Bergh and the little Berghs that cling to the central figure, ie toss was made for first shot, an won by Mr. Heckseher. At fifteen minutes | after twelve Mr. Heckscher stepped forward and received | is gun from Ira Paine, and, turning to the man at the i ba ‘attached to the traps, asked:— ‘Are you ready? Pull!”” Tn an Cage the report of both barrels rattled and re- echoed from the neighboring trees, the second barrel bringing down the bird us though it had been struck by | lightning. As Mr. Grund advanced to take | THE FIRST SHOT ! ‘There was the most profound silence, Everybody ‘Was anxious to know how he would commence, espe- cially as some friend of his opponent offered to hazard a considerable sum against hit, He fred, however, and | the first shot was suificient to kill that bird. Now they Started even for the second birds. Both Mr. Hegkscher’s | barrels failed to retain his second bird within the bounds, | and this was dec!ared THE FIRST “BAD BIRD.”” Mr. Grund only brought down his second with the | barrel. Now they .went earnestly to work, and | each took the mark as’ rapidly as the guns could be | loaded, At the fifth bird Mr. Grund was one abead, as | i | i | is not to be despised in re NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, AUGUST 17, 1875. The Com- mittee on Procession reported the receipt of his opponent had missed twice, while he had only inissed once.
