Some remark having been caused in commercial and banking circles yesterday by the assertion that a por- tion of the liabilities of Messrs, Duncan, Sherman & Co, consisted of drafts drawn upon them by a confidential clerk and indorsed by them instead of being regular commercial paper, inquiries were made on the subject by Hxnaco reporters, which developed the fact that tho Manufacture of paper in that method is recog- nized by the strect as regular and unobjectionable, as the buyers look to the credit of the indorsing or ac- cepting house, without troubling themselves to inquire about the drawer of the paper. It is suid that substan- Ual houses habitually raise money on that class of securities, The suspended firm makes no secret of the fact that they have for a long period used that method. ‘They, however, indignantly and most positively deny the adsertion that in some cases this class of their paper Dears fictitious nen purporting to be drawn at various Southern cities or elsewhere to give it an uir of suriculy commercial paper. They have never resorted to any subterfuges af the kind to mislead those who might hold thelr paper. THRIR, STATEMENT. So well wero these executed, however, that when a Herat reporter called the clerk stated that there were still great doubts whether the bonds were forged or not, as comparisons had to be made with tho genuine bonds by aid of magnifying glasses. Mr. P. G. Calhoun, President of the Fourth National Bank, has gince stated that a bank official had called upon him some time ago to test the genuineness of the bonds upon which they were about to make @ loan, and that, being ane of the trustees under the mortgage, he COULD NOT DENY IIS SIGNATURE, Therefore the loan was mado, ‘The discovery of the fraud was due to the fact that a coupon of bond No. 6,375 had been already paid. The California and Oregon Railroad was consolidated with the Central Pacific Rail- road August 22, 1870, und the latter company guaran- tees their bond’, which bear six per cout gold interest, and have twenty yearstorun. The trustees are Meseis. Philo ©. Calhoun’ and Eugene Kelly, the former filling the vacancy occasioned by the of Mr. D. & Dodge. 1t will thus be seen what a DANGEROUS COUNTERFEIT was on the point of flooding the money centres of the country. The detectives were of the opinion that t) forged securities bore evidences of skilful workmanship, jas that premature publicity might defeat the ends oi justice, Detectives Elder, McDougall and Thompson were working up the case, and late on Wednesday night four men were arrested by thom on suspicion of being con- nected with the forgery. They were taken to tho Tombs and afterward remanded to the Ceutrai Head- quarters. ‘The names of the prisoners are Edward Hall, George Ray, —— Marshall and —— Hazerel or Hazowell, The latter person is believed to be an important cap- ture, but the detectives are very properly reticent and their prompt action is very commendable. It is believed the bulk of tho money loaned on the forged bonds has been recovered. ‘The ‘numbers of the bonds are 6,339, 345, 5,346, 6,349 and 5,866 to 5,876 inclusive. ‘The algnatares of ‘TNE GRNCIN® BONDS can scarcely be distinguished from those on the counter- feita. Mr. Fisk told the Heratp representative yester- day that detection of a difference is most difficult, Mr, Eugene Kelly, one of tho trustees, said he had not yet examined the forged bonds, but he advised bankers, brokers and bond dealers to adopt his rule and never do business with strangers. TELEGRAPH GOSSIP Atill continues to vary the summer dulness in monoy circles, The course of Western Union stock was up- ward yesterday, It was surmised that the mecting of the Executive Committee on Wednesday, and the appoint- ment of a comtittee, consisting of ex-Governor Morgan Messrs, Harrison, Durkee and Frank Work, to con- fer with the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph directors, looked toward a consolidation of the latter with the former line, President Orton yesterday addressed the editor of an evening herent in reference to publica- tions indicating that he bad entered into a conspiracy, arrangement or understanding with Jay Gould looking to the turning out of certain of his present associates in the Western Union Board at the annual election in October and the substitution of Mr, Gould and his friends. Concerning these allegations and insinuations he says:— ‘a It isnot trae that I desire to be rid of any of my asso- en in the directory of the Western Union. GOLD 1183-4 A 118 5-8. Investment Securities Bonds Steady. Firm— WALL Srreer, } Thursday, August 12—6 P. M. In activity and firmness Western Union to-day again took the lead, The belief generally prevails, and it is the conversational topic of the hour, that sooner or later a combination will be effected between this corpo- ration and the Atlantic aud Pacific Telegraph Company, whereby the former will obtain the principal control of the telegraph system and be in a condition to estab- lish what rates it may deem profitable and acceptable to the public, Whether the respective committees of con- ference will make their report at an early day isa doubtful question, it being properly argued that so important a change, and one that is likely to materially advance the price of Western Union, will not be officially announced to tho public on a dull market, An open secret is a good toy to play with Erie was held with tolerable firmness, in the hope that the representatives of tho English tnterest in the stock and bonds may succeed in effecting a compromise that will prevent tho line from passing through the last stages of litigation, That earnest efforts will be made to reach a mutually satisfactory solution of the pending difficulties is true, but the path is a rugged one and important concessions must be made on both sides. Itis yet too early to discuss any pro- grammo that may have been suggested or to infer re- sults, Atlantic and Pacific preferred, which yesterday sold down to 11% and to-day opencd at 114s, showed an improved tone and closed at 1244 812%.
