The evidence against the officer, givem by a number of eye-wit- nesses to the occurrence, was of the most damag- ing character. ‘The specifications set forth that on the evening 1 June 27, between eight and nine o’clock, Patrol- man Bernard Canill, of the Sixteenth precioct, gpproached Francis Gorman, who was quietly hitting on his door steps at No, 239 West Fitteontn Stree“ °* otdered him inside the house. ALL STREET, } taveapare ‘Saly 15—6 P. M. The fatiures for the half year ending with last month, for the entire United States, are stated to be 3,377, with abilities not quite $75,000,000, ‘Inia number is only slightly in excess of tue average of years, while the amount of liabilities is re- ported lower than jor any six months in the past jour yi ‘These are very gratifying statements, | especially bearing in mind the extreme depres- sion in all interests and the peculiarly trying cir- cumstances of the past season. These Azures are ail the more gratifying contrasted with those iur- nished of the state of things abroad, In Engiaud the failures in three cities alone for the past three months show habilities of £28,000,000, or over $100,000,000, This amount exceeds by twenty-five per cent THE TOTAL LYABILITIES OP ALL FAILURES among 650,000 traders in the United States during twice the time. In Canada, near by, the failures in the six months are 800, with liabilities of $12,000,000—far greater in mumber and amount than in any State of the Union jor the same period, excepting New York, with ten times the number of | traders. The source from which these interesting Agures are derived—the semi-annual circular of bun, Barlow J Cos mercantile agency—atirib- utes the limited number of satiures in the United | States to the comparatively small mercantile in- debteduess that has prevailed since war, and ince the panic of 1873, has steadily de- Notwithstanding these apparently favor- able facts, which appear to be of a more negative than positive character, the agency goes on to remark :— The oxprcations which were indulged in at th: early part of tbe ‘year, that the business of the couutry would revive, have not been tuilfl Comparea With tuls time twelve months ago there 18 but Little, if any, improvement perceptible either in the Volume or profitableuess of trade. The result appears to contain much that 1 encouraging.
