FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Barely ‘Steadv. GOLD 115 7-8 A 115 8-4. Bonds Generally Steady and Investment So- curities in Fair Demand. Wat. STREET, } Monpay, July 12—6 P. M. Tne stock market to-day was again extremely dull, and presented few ieatures that are worthy of comment. Chief among these was renewed ac- tivity in New York Central and Rock Island, both of which, as investment securities, illustrated a fact that we nave frequently presented, to wit that good dividend paying stocks would always command the confidence of investors, and espe- cially at @ season of the year when capital pracu. cally “goes a-begging.” Among the incidents of ‘the day may be counted an assault on Erie im the sbape of an anonymous circular, without date, purporting to emanate from an unorganized and irresponsipie body in London, calling for a meeting of shareholders at sme point in Beaver street. Whatever occurred will be found de- scribed elsewhere. Svlid operators, however, paid little or no attention to the matter and did not change their foiings a8 4 conse quence. In other words, the mecting was looked upon as one of the frauds of speculation, Lake Shore was comparatively firm in spite of the hammering to which it was subject, and closed at tne highest price of the day, With reference to Pacific Mail, it is reported that the company Das just consummate: a contract with the Welling- ton Coal Mine, on Puget Sound, whereby it will hereafter secure coal at $5 50 per ton, and thus effect a saving of about 40 per centin the cost of fuel, It is also stated that the government of British Columbia has agreed to pay a subsidy of $55,000 per annum to the company for transport- ing the mails, This being true, several of the side- wheel steamers now idiing st anchor in the har- bor of San Francisco may find employment. Tne foregoing information was not publisoed until after the close of the Stock Exchange. THE PRICES TO-DAY. Further large smipments are confidently expeeted, but, whether these take piace or not, the feel- tng of the majority of speculators ts in favor Of @n advance that 1s based on the known paucity Of wala in the country and the small amount at the command of the Secretary of the Treasury in tne event of any great contingency, It may be easy to sell new five per cent bonds at home to Colorado and Nevada speculators, wherewith to buy silver, but we cannot mo’ large sapply of old from Europe without disturbing every for- eign financial centre. BNOBBERY IN A PUBLIC OFFICE, Yesterday there was @ seizure thas may turn out to be important ag an elucidation of some of the irregularities that have puzzled the honest customs officers lately. Inspector Ellis found on tae White Star docks goods ostensibly tutended for the sample room, which, seeming suspicious to that officer, he caused their removal to the felzure room of the Custom House. Upon an ex- amination of two trunks they were found to con- tain dutiable goods, Ibe strangest part of the story rematns, however, to be told. HERALD representative heard from an outside source of the seizure and went directly to the Oustom House to have it dented or verified. The under- clerks in the Seizure Bureau, usually truthiul and polite, denied that ti haa been goods brought to the room where such pack: are held. Upon returmmg to the same aiter @ brief interval, THB DOORS WERE FOUND LOOKED and an eXamination evidently going on tnsid Undoubtedly the omicers of the Custom Hou: have aright to conduct & secret appraisemens whenever they see fit to do so, bat yesterday it bappened that @ reporter of a certala newspaper Was found closeted with Colouel Triechel—the gentleman whom the government nas designated as proper to be the temporary custodian of smng- gied goods—and receiving information of a public character to the exclusion of ether journals, The circumstance seemed suspicious, and im conne: tion wish the rumors rife of Castom House wrongs aud joboery it is suspicious and may lead the pub- He properly to ask, “WHO ARB THESK SERVANTS of ours who shut the doors in our faces? What are Shey doing that must be done in toe dark The HERALD has been outspoken against th Tings kuown to exist in this branch of the govern- ment service, and no head of any bureau in tho Custom House is beyond criticism through tuese columns when he becomes amenable to his mas- ters—the public. R On Saturday last inquiry was made at this very Ofice for information ss to 8 aemijonu and a cask of Wine or oil, which it aiterward appeared was landed from a@ bark jrom Casteliamare. The ro- ply, in @ brasque tone from the head of the bureau, was:—‘‘Hospital stores; we are taking care oi them.” They may as weil hold a star Chamber council tn the gloomy cloisiers of the Custom House, forever lock the doors of their seizure room and dribole out information as it sults them as to thus tride with the grave inter ests given by weir superiors lave their hauds. THE BREAK IN THE ERIZ OANAL The despatch received in this city yesterday from Buffalo announcing that a break of about 500 feet had occurred im the Erte Oaual, one mile east of Palmyra, was a topic of conversation and speculation yesterday among grata merchants, A HERALD reporter called on Mr. George C. Martin, of the firm of David Dows & Co. Nos. 19 and 20 South street, and was told by him that if the re- pair was not effected before a week many mer- chants would necossarily suifer for the time ing, a the price of grain would go up sev per bushel. While in co rter, Mr. Martin rece’ Rochester to the 10 days. On Saturday as! is of Wheat were standing on tne canal, and it would be sale to say, In Mr. Martin’s opinion, that nearly three-fourths of the toral were this side of the break. On the same day thero were 700,000 bushels of corn on the canal, and perhaps the quantity on this side of toe break was about in to portion as the mr. Martin stated fur 0) fheting re the extent of the break, and that the canal officials had all lefs Rochester for the scene of the occurrence. CORONERS’ CASES.
