Striking an old. aluost obhterated Uie trail, we proceeded up spur after spur of one of the moun. eee to be more than 19,000 feet above the sea, The neighboring peaks, even from (bis elevated point, | towered tuousands of leet above us, for tis is |*eonaidered quite a depressed pass, We descend the western slope and wended our way througd a canyon some eight miles in length, aud in the afternoon, tired, hungry and almost blinded by | the sand, we passed out into San Lonte Valley, At the foot of the mountains aro | situatea the mammoth sandhilis, which | cover an a of avout ten miles in length j and three or four in width, They present the most wonderful natural surface feature of any part of the country we have yet traversed. Rising for hundreds of feet (some of the cones probabiy reach 600 feet above the valley), they resembie a mountaiu chain of sand peaks, The sanais fine, clean and of a beautiful iight brown or yellow color, The ridges and sbarpenea edges relievé the monotony of the coloring, and the delicate rippling of the surface ts something exquisite. ‘These dunes rise up @ ass Of barren loose sand, with only here and there a ridge sparsely clothe: with a sickly, pale green grass, which at @ short distance gives the surface a delicate tint, con- trasting beautifully with tne pale back ground, 4 stream (Musca Creek) flows around the base of them, and on one side of it the smooth perpen- dicular walls of sand rise toa beight of hundreds 01 feet, and ag tue wind blows little clouds of sand slide down one alter another like whirla of dense smoke, The stream here ts quite broad and very shallow, as though the sand nad drifted in and uiled up ils bed. AS we passed along its banks we could not help thinking that one suddem, violent blast of wind might make for us A LIVING GRAVE, The great mass has evidently drifted here from the valley beyond, but-ic must have tuken aged for 1t to accumulate, The outiines are constantly changing. ‘Tse wind blows a little {rom on¢ point, and siftsitinto the next hollow. Thus im the course of time the peaks and valleys will be reversed, as they probably have been countless times belure, and, forever assuming new forma and creeping onward year after year, the greaw body of sand continues to exhibit new phases, but is never lessened, ‘Ihese same driits might tell strange tales, could they speak, of wayfarers being overtaken by a hurricane and buried alive {n their very bowels, or of wild beasts that per ished In their very clutches, ‘ihe old hunters and miners, who frequently pass this section, tell a story Of a flock of sheep that were suddenly eu+ guited in a sand storm while unsuspiciously graze ing in the neighborhood, ‘The roud through Musca Pass is a toll road (the toll being $1 per team), and opens out into the valley at the foot of the sand hills. We arrived here the Same night with our muies, but the wagon did not reach us until the followingday. We lound@ notice pinned to the aoor o! a deserted cabin, irom Mr, Holmes, stating that bis party bad passed this way during the day aod would camp at the San Luis Lakes, In crossing Musca Fass the old Ute trail was reo ognized by numerous iragments of pottery scar tered along ta borders, Among these we picked up a jug which was almost whole, made froma coarse, micaceoas clay, burned very dark red, 1¢ 1s impossible to determine the age of this vessel, butit may have been fashioned 59 or 100 year@ ago, for its composition 18, hard and tough. Very few, if any, of the Ute tribe of Indians constract clay utensils at the present day, but wickerwork vessels have becn substituced for them. The trail on wnich tols was picked up has not been trav- elied by these Indians tor years, so that this fact initsel! would prove the specimen to be of con- siderable age. Iu contrast to this specimen 1s one which | was fortunate enough to obtain in Denver, which was dug up on the Denver Plains last winter, It waa once evidently a Lowl usea for holding liquias, jashioned out of soft steatite, The bottom ia elliptical, the diameters of whicn are five and three and @ half inches, but toe upper portions of the brim have been bruken away, It is well known that only a few years ago bows and stou pointed arrows were abandoned jor guns, and even now in some portions of the West they are still chipped out of stone, About siX miles from Kosita (to the north), on the hilside on which we encamped, were picked up Various pieces of stone weapons of all forma aud made of many kinds of rock, From the appearance of these fragments 1t may be inierred that this Was once a@ locality where they were munofactured, as no perfect specimens were obtained, ali being uudnished or imperfect. We found several here in @ haif-finished condition, During the summer a carefal search will be made for theae interesting relies of the stone age (for there can be no doubt that some of them date back that far, even if many were in use alter the bronze age had commenced), and very impultaat discoveries are expected to be made, THE SAN LUIS VALLEY is a level, sandy tract, hemmed in completely by mountain ranges. Through vearly its whole ex: tent it 1s covered with sand several inches deep, Leaving the bottom of Musca Pass at four o’cloce P. M, we started on our drive of forty miles across the valley to the Rio Grande del Norte, forin all this distance there 1s no water alter the first few miles, and the heat reflected at midday from the scorching sand woula bave been ulmost unendar- able. As it was, the thermometer stood at 123 degrees in the sun toward evening; but we had a pleasant breeze, aud as night came on we expo rienced Do inconvenience from this source, When we had passed around to the svuth of the sana bills for about eight miles we stopped at dusk te give our animals the beneflt of some good grass, growing along the banks of a brack- ish stream, to prepare them tor their long journey, ‘his was the only green spot that we saw on our march in the whole valley, and here we remained for a couple of hours waiting for the moun to rise and getting a mouthiul of launch, | Presently the evening star rose irom belind a snow-clad peak, and after it the moon, in dull chase. At nall-past pine we packed up again and were off for good, It was a beautiful, brignt nignt, the air being still and the moun at full, and we al) folt in high spirits notwithsiauding the prospect ofa good two days’ ride before us at one stretch, ln this dry atmosphere there is no dew, but the air soon begaa to grow unpleagantly cool, and con unued to grow colder unt. we were chilled through and through. At half-past twelve we passed the San Luis Lakes, the largest of which is over @ miloin length, and, a8 we pusued ou, sleep began to overs come us, It was dificuit to proserve one’s bab ance iu the waddle, and evory jew mowents we would fod ourselves in the act of falling off. The only way to arouse ourselves was to walka mile or so every little while; butthe sand was so heavy that tis occupation soon necame very tiresome, Tho air continued to grow so cutily that we were | almost benumbed, and the temperature mast have been nearly down to freezing. We passed only a few ranches belonging to Mexican cuatile rat: and we saw but one small clamp of tr whoie journey, The nignt seemed interminable as we rode slowly on, and We watched the com steliations of stars change slowly, almost impen cepubly: but at length @ narrow band of pale light rested on the outlines of the eastern mountaing tue Biz Dipper gradually brought down its handle, settled on its bott»m and faded out of the north. ern horizon, Tue moon, observing this, sidled up to the evening stur, and, twisting her head side ways, seemed to be trying 10 butt it dows out of sight ore the day should dawn, Then the bright, Welcome morning star came up, and the moon just succeeded in slipping out of sight be hind @ southern peak before the sua peeped over Muses Pi with ome eye to What was doing in the valley, Gad, supposing overytuing ail right, leered over With both oyes, like an early farmer looking over the fence of his pigsty to ascertain how his protégéa had passed the night, We soon became Warmed, and 9 iew miles ahead of us wa a long line of tre Walch marked the course a} the Rio Grande, Arriving at lis banks, at abont eight o'viock A, M., we mot Mr, Hulmos’ party | Just preparing to depart for Del Norte, Tuas our forty mules nignt drive was over; tho San Luis Valley nad deen crossed safely, and, although we were all very thankiul, We wore extremely tired ond empio,ed most of the morning in On Sunday, the 20th of Jane, we entered De} Norte, a town of some 8,000 inbabitants and tne f ‘our epuorold, wo found | headguarters of tne San Juau mining country, « 9)
