FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Stocks Dull, but Firm---An Advance in Western Union. GOLD DECLINES TO 116 7-8. Money as Usual—Investment Se- eurities Strong. WALL Srreer, } Weronespay, June 30-6 P. M, Much diversity of opinion attended the close of the market to-day, but it was evidently not incon- sistent with the purposes of those who are seek- ing to establish a sbort interest as a nucleus for higher prices. We do not propose to give reasons why one stock has advanced under persona! man- agement or another has receded; but we do recognize the fact, taking the official quotations @guide, that near!y all securities, good and bad, resist depreciating efforts more successfully bow than they did ten days ago. In itsel! this is a symptom of strength, and 1t warrants @ reasser- on of the thought that ir the crops of America good and our exports are enlarging—which ig true—if our railways are saving money, our Merchants are conservative, our manufacturers are augmenting the wealtn of the land and our farmers and planters are feeling THE INSPIRATION OF A NEW ERA of success, then there is good reason for the reap- pearance in the fleld of investment Of that large class who are content to trust their surplud earnings to the vicissitudes of speculation. It 19 not to be denied, however, that many reactions may occur in which those who are not most pa.ient will feel tnat they have been sacrificed; butin the long ran, if there be any suggestive force in the growth of the country, the re-estab- Msnment of faitu, the residency of our national Atrength and credit, the growth, elasticity and adaptability of our people, those who take advan- tage of the opportunities of the present hour will reap reward. Money is easy, Good stocks and bonas are cheap. Our government securities are like gold, at home and abroad, Bad weeds have been cut down and threshed out. Gur present offerings to the Old World are without taint and subject to new conditions. In short, America shows its recovery !rom the hysteria of speculation, and, with our low prices and fresh start, there 1s no good reason why. looking months and years ahead, we shall not feel the revivifying influences of renewed conti- dence and enjoy the commercial strength that belongs to renewed international faith. Of THE LOCAL STOCK MARKET to-day little more may be written than 1s required for a description of prices. ‘The leading feature in point of activity was Western Union, which advanced from 78 to 797%, tie highest price being established near the close, It is said that the en- tire 7 per cent currency loan of $4,000,000 nas now been taken, Lake Shore showed more activity than strength, but its irtends are predicing higher prices as the result of a meeting of the Executive Committee to-morrow, at which it is expected that a dividend of 1}; per cent, more or less, will be declared. Tne promise of Commodore Vanderbilt that ne would pay to stockholders whatever the road earned has had much to do with the prevailing firmness of its stock. Its prices to-day were 61% a 62% 8 61%.
