EET er re INTERESTING INCIDENTS OF THE MARCH—DT#- COVERY OF CONCHOLOGICAL sPERCITENS— EZOCENTRICITIES OF THR EQCKY MOUNTAIN SHREP—THE ROSITA MINES, Is Cas, SOUTHERN Loronano,} June 17, 1876, As we advance southward through Colorado the climate becomes warmer, the flora grows | more tropical and the character of the waole country changes. The midday san pours down its scorching rays, parching the eartu jap- | ping up all the motsture of the small streams and | lakes, leaving only @ little in an occasional river bed, whic, om account of its greater drainage, survives the ovbers, The cacti iucrease | in size and numbers, and huge trees of | complexiy branched species abound ever) Where. The smalier yeilow-Nowered prickly | pear multiplies over tae sandy tacielands and blends the colors of tts large, rick blossoms with the scarlet flowers of the globe cactus, Tho Marshes and wet Jands are rich im their rare aud snowy plants, whule the flora of the higher eleva- tions, above timber line, is varied and beauiiful. In many places for stretones of mues aud miles the country presents barren, rocky tracts or sandy deserts, while in tne low river bottoms the vegetation is rank and luxuriant. Insects become more numerous, And at every successive camp we make these small vermin as well as iarger, in the way of mice, toads and small snakes, grow more aneoying 40d obnoxious for a@ time, It is any- thing but pleasant om awaking tn the early morning fo discover pernaps @ couple of young ing between the blankets oj one’s bed, or to Mind a | full grown toad comfertably enecouced in ab of field mice under tie pillow; yet this frequeatly occurs. But these are unavoidable compautons, and ene becomes used te their presence in the course of a few weers, particularly if there are no venemous specica among them, Great care must ve taken, however, in selecting @ resting piac to keep at @ distance from any holes in which rattlesnakes may be secreted, for in dry, sandy districts tuey are always abu t. TAB PROTOGRAPHIO PARTY expedition, having separated from the branches some days previons, remained over at Canyon City on Sunday, the 13th of Jane, in order to dispose of the extra luggage, photo- graphic instruments and provisions which haa been forwarded to us from Denver. Having ar- | rang the cargo satisfactorily for the morrow’a mart, We Spent the alternoon io a reconnoisance of we interesiing country surrounding us. We tried the hot soda baths, and were greatly refreshed thereby, for which we were | charged the modest sum of Mfty cents apiece; after Which Wo crossed the river to the north side ead visited the cold mineral springs, from whieh we drunk long and copioasiy. During the afte: boon, in passing & small pond, I was fortunate enough to discover in its water and on Its bau! nine distinct species of sdells, all of them dimii tive, but representing the ra heliz, hetroina, vitrina, liinnea, pupa and phyra, The menvers | of this branch of natural history are so scarce in the Territory that the obtaining of euch a collec. tion in nearly the same spot was very enovur- aging for (he summer's prospects. At four o'clock the next morning most of the camp Was asiir; for it was desirable, having extraordinarily heavy load, to be of betore tue heat of the day, Tae welcome yet unweicume call of “Grab-pile!” apprised the dilatory ones | that it was time for breakfast, The sound wasa | want one to our Clamorous stomachs, but ® very Upweicome one to our sleep-craving propensities, Hy hulf-pastsix the packs were ad- justed and all in readiness for starting. M., On account of thé heaviness of the packs and ti way Wo bad ped on @ delight | surrounded by & dense from their persecutors, | fourteen mil | for sayin, | sales were 44,700 rest of the day in this spot, The aparejoes were set as usual in a rew in the foreground, and sna cargo assorted according to the order in whic! we might wish to make use of any portion of it. We had been favored with unusually clear ‘weather ever since leaving Denver, witn the ex+ ception of one or two insignificant showers. 16 was a superb night, and, witn nothing over us but our blankets and the broad canopy of heaven, We lay down to sleep and peaceful dreams, Getting off by seven o'clock the next morning, we had hardly travelled three miles when a rara sight met our eyes, the like of which, in ali proba- bility, we shall never see again, Several of us nad been riding in the rear of the train, WATOSING OLD “JAKE,” * one of the largest pack mules, who at every op- portunity would slink inte some secluded clamp of busues by the wayside and lie down unob~ served, This he had aiready done several times, and once or twice we bad been on the verge of losing him, As we rode through @ narrow canyon, walled on one side by asteepbank covered with trees and onthe other by a towering mass of perpendicular rock, happening to glance upward, we saw, standing on one of the narrow ledges of the latter, a flock of sheep, which some of av first took for antelope, which was a very ridicus lous errer.” Byery one observed them at the same time, and for an instant, 80 great wasour surprise, not @ man stirred in bis saddle. There, with inquis- itive gaze, unmixed with fear, scarcely 100 feet above us, were seven Rocky Mountain sheep, five of them fall grown and two of them small lambs, In our excitement we did net determine how many were rams and how many ewes, but, as both s0Xes are endowed with horns, this oversight may havo been excusavle. At the same se@ond, as if ata given signal, each man leaped from his seat, and, bending one knee to the ground, picked out his animal and fired, There was o quick mover ment among our animals, and almost instantance ously both mules and sheep were out of sight, The two little lambs, however, appeared again In a perpendicular crevice near the summit of the rock, and, bleating piteously, skipped over such seemingly inaccessible places that they resem, bled files gliding rapidiy up a wall, This was.the signal for numerous wild shots; for, al though most of the boys were good marksmen the sudden unlooked-for appearance of this noble game unnerved them and they shot wide of the mark. Thus it came about that we had no tender wild-mutton for our dinne: THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN SHEEP, A few words to this place relacive to these an: mals may be of interest, A full-grown ram js as large a8 @ good-sized domestic calf, Its coat of hair resembles in texture and color that of a deer, beimg coarse and of & gray color. The horns are stout and curved backward, as in a domestic sheep, with the exceplion that they are much larger. The femule possesses them alsa, veing straighter and shorter. Hunters say that im descending from a rocky elif they throw themselves sometim: over filty feet, allgsting on their horns, which are so tic that the amtmal bounds into the air and alights on its feet. This ts very plausible, as the Indiané use these horns for bows, possessing some means ef straightening them ont for ‘ais purpose, | An ordinary sheep will weigh 500 or 600 pounds The excitement being over (who cam blame @ man for beeoming excited on such an occasion, When it ls KnOWn that these animais are becoming so rare even in these mountains?) there was nothing leit to do but resume our journey, re- gretting tie haste with which we had acted, But not a mule was to beseen. After a few moments’ search we Giacoverad them in @ little hollow, thicket, tm whien they had unwittingly corralied themselves, ali standing in a circle, with their long, solemn Noses touching, seeming te be consniting among themselves which way to proceed to get away We drove on for about before stopping for the day. The road lay in dust #ix inches thick, and, as the wind blew briskly, we were constantly enveloped in @ @ense cloud, Our eyes soon felt like deserts of saud, with a mud pool im each gorner, and wa were like blind men following the blind, Where ‘we were compelled to camp there was no water In the neighborhood fer several miles, excepting ove stagnant, filthy puddie of viack mud, where the cattle had been wallowing. It resembied the black filth of a city refuse sink; but as there was @ spring at the bottom and there was no other avaliable water, we had tomake the best of it. Digging out the stinking muck with a spade, we walled the hole up with stones, and bailing the dirty water out for over am hour, were rewarded at length with some tolerably clear water, wkich We were compelled to drink ourselves after fiter- ing, avd dip out in buckets to the thirsty animais, But it was cool, and by shutting our eyes to avuld veeing the color avd by holding our breath to pre- vent the odor from choking us, we coaid imagine it by a strange sor of mental legerdemain, aciear. cool, sparkilng, heaituful beverage. from our camp on Oak Creek we picked hp along the way from time to time small pieces of rich ore, containing ead, copper, trom, and not a Uttie silver, Itkad evidently been dropped from Wagons loaded with the ore (rom the Rosita mines, and, meeting some men witk two wagon loads of | the precions metal, we were presented with a mple of the best mine im that locality, which specimen was the richest we had ever seen. We were now very near Wet Mountain Valiay, woieh would have to be crosaed In a day or 80, aud in ac- cordance with Its legendary character tho sky even now became overcast and threatening we put up our tents beneath the shelter of tue gitns pines, threngh whick the wind sighed piain- | tively, waftiog their sweet odors around us te soothe us to sleep.
