Suddenly the rower dropped his oars and sat in the boat apparently speaking to his companion, who did not move, ‘the boat rap- idly moved away under the influence of the run- ning tide, and those on shore who had been watching their movements began to believe that the man had lost control of his crait. Edward Delaney, a Whitehall boatman, and Collins, the man who had let the boat out, decided to go to the rescue of tuose in it. With that purpose tn view they quickly amped into @ boat and steered for the other, which was now a conaiderabie dis- tance away. With strong. rapid strokes they suc- ceeded in getting within speaking distance Of the otker Doat, When they saw the stranger DRAW A REVOLVER from his pocket and deliberately fire at the girl. She screamed and put her hands up, as if to pro. tect herself against tne murderer. tie then tired & second ana a third shot at her, and she fell backWard evidently wounded. The two boat- men hastened their speed to catcn up with the boatin which so terrible a crime was being done before thetr eyes. But the stranger was too quick for them, He raised the revolver a fourth time, pointed it at ois own breast aud fired, At the same moment the upper pare of bis body fell over the side of the noxt, while the revolver went to the bottom of the river, The boatmen quickly reached the boat of the crimin ‘They found the gir! still breathing, but the man quite dead, They Wek the boat in tow and rowed with their ghastiv burden to Governor's Island, where they knew they would find a doctor. Tbe surgeon of the post attended the girl, Who was mot i much pain, and then she Was sent over to the New street station house. whence an ambulance con- veyed her to the Park Hospital. In the meantime whe body of the man was tuken to the Battery, and jay there im the beat for some hours unul the Coroner gave un order for its trans- fer to the Morgue, in Twenty-sixth street, WHAT THE GIRL SAYS. A reporter of the HERALD saw the wounded girl at the Park Hospit She had one wound on the ‘Outside Of the left thigh, another in the ball of the thumb, and a third, whicnin ail probability will prove fatal, three or four tnches below the mght of the umbilicus, ‘Lhis has uncoubtedly traversed many vital parts, The girl was cousciots, and did not seem to specially regret her position. She sald her Bame Was Sophie Sckaedier: that sue had been in this country for twenty months, and that she lived in Howard street, Philadelphia, but did net remember the numover. ‘he man who snot her, she suid, Was her fatter, She declinea togive bis name or to state the cause o1 the tragedy. When asked if bis surname was the sume name as hers she would not answer. she Said she bad always been on good terms with her father, and that sue did not know whether she Would live or die, She had wot worked at any trade here. More she reiused to say. She was only @ few moments at the Park Hospital, and Was tuence takeu away to Bellevue Hospital, She ‘wil, probably, not survive ner injuries very long. THE THEORY OF THE DiKD, which those who saw the actors in the tragedy give, is that tne father Was upbraiding bis daugh- ver for having gone astray, aud that findiug sue Was obdurate and determined in her ways he had sudcenly made up his mind to Kill her-aod him- self, When he saw her fall back at the third shot Be, no doudt, thought ber dead and then com- pleted his deed by killing bimself, He was evidently poor, as only twenty ceuts were found on his person and be wore no jewelry. ‘The air of mystery which hangs around it adas to the interest of the sad affair. Tne parties are utterly unknown in this city, and itis a matter of douvt if they have any relatives in the country. When the writer last saw the girl she wi “ re ttin, worse and becoming slightly deranged. e suf- Jered mach and was unceasing in her ries for water.
