WALL STREET NOTES. oe ake) THE SENSATIONAL RUMORS INFLUENCING THE MARKET—AN ANALYSIS OF THEIR VALUE. There was the customary disposition on the street yesterday, which was quite enthusiastic over the rumored go cut of a subsidy trom the Australian government to Paciac Mail for a) Mocthily steamer between San Francisco and Sydney or Melbourne tbe day previous, 10 exmoit distrust of any such arrangement. ‘The reticence of Pacific Mail ofiicials in thia ctty on the subject, of course, helped this discouragement, the stock going off in consequence, but those who sull pos- sess their faita in THE POSSIBILITIES OF THE FUTURE hold still that, although the matter may Nov yet have reached a dedn.te conclusion andthe sum be exaggerated, there is no sudicient ground for a total denial of the stury, They polnt to the fact that having lost the carrying trade of the At- Jantic, without any prospect of its early recovery, We, a3 a@nation, sould make every endeavor to gain the control of that of the Pacific, wich 13 of right our special privilege. Tha: nothing would serve more to reinstate Paciilc Mail in public that direction, by becoming associated with the commercial prosperity of so flourishing a colony as Australia, is UNDOUBTED TRUIH. Besides Australia would derive great advantage in a service such as is proposed, the cost of trans- portation via San Francisco and New York being much less than vat by way of the Suez Canal m | consequence of the extravazant tolls charged on the cunal, und the route by the Cape of Good Hode beiug too long for the eAigeucies of modern commerciai enterprise. Tue developement of this enaracter Of eXpausion in & corporation like Pacitic Mali deserves every encouragemeut fron. ihe Inends of Americau maritime revival, rather | than siurs calculated to interrapt negotiations of | this character. The statute re- quired notice to be given as @ Fale, the exception relates tO a particular time and @ particular cause. Both must exist'to justify removal with out notice, The time must be on a day of reg tration, revision of registration or election, and the cause must be improper conduct as au clec- | tion omicer, and, 1u aduition, the incumbent must be on duty.
