THE DEADLY ENCOUNTER BETWEEN WILLIAM DEMPSEY AND JAMES BUTTERLY—'‘‘THERD’S | ANOTHER DAY FOR DEMPSEY.” The investigation into the murder of James Bytterly took place last evening before Justice Patrick Warren, at Jersey City. lt will be re- membered that on the last day of last December James Butterly was severely beaten Im a saloon, at tne corner of Thirteenth and Henderson streets, tm Jersey City. He weot aiterward to the bake- shop of Williaa Dempsey, im Meadow street, Hoboken, where he had beem employed. Next morning he was found in the bake- shop so badly injured that he was taken to the hospital, where he died seven days after- ward. An inquest was held, but the witnesses gave testimony very reluctantly and the jury rendered @ verdict that deceased came to his death at the hands of some person or persons un- known, Every attempt was made to baffle in- vestigation, but it bas at last leaked out that some of the witnesses were under restraint and new tesumony has been elicited. As already stated in the HgraLp, Dempsey was arrested on saturday evening on a warrant issued by Justice Warren.
