Many of the cottazes between the Ocean and the West End hotels have not yet | been let, and the shutters are nailed up with | white pine laths. Those without bills “To Let” | ave the exception. It was thought here that when the | President arrived the season would immediately become brisk, but the anticipation has not been verified, and it is probable that the teason Will not open tor at least two weeks. There are many reasons for this scarcity | of noticeable receptions or hops among the cee | tage people, principal among them being the lack | of accommodation, With a few notable excep | tions the cottages are too small for anything very _ “awell.”” THE COTTAGES. ‘Those who are most interested and who ought so know say that the outlook for a sprightly sea- | son among the cottages is not as favorable as | might be. Just at present cottages are a drog in the market. Beside the large number which are annually open for hire, as many more belonging | to families who have gone to the other side of the | Atlantic on a trip or to be present at the rifle match, | are now offered. Agents here say that in all | probapility business will brighten up when the weather 18 more settled. ‘Those who have so- Journed bere in former years KNOW that cot- tages can be hired om much easier verms during the month of July than earlier in the season, and it ig probable that meny such will yet come down, The prices of cottages ate pretiy much the same as in previous years; rents ranging from $900 to $4,000, The conjectures re- qurding the cause of thls duiness include others than those of lateness of seuson and flnanctal de- bulty. Welby Pugin, a famous arcoiiect, tue chief reviver of the Gothic style of architec ture aud ecclesiastical art in England, who died on the 14th of September in the year 1852, Mr. Pugin, the son, now deceased, was born on the lth of Maren, in the year 1834. James Stillman, whose funeral took place at Morrisania yesterday alternoon, was one of th pioneer journalists of Westchester county and the oldest member of the newspaper fraternity in that county as its territorial lines existed previous to annexauon. Barry, tor. the past six years member of the House of Representatives from Mississippi, died suddenly yesterday, the 7th inst., at the residence of his motner-in-iaw, in Wasbiug- ton, of apoplexy. The deceased gentleman, Henry W. Barry, of | Columbus, Representative in Congress for the Third district of Mississippi, including nine coun. | ties, was born in New Yor<. He wasa person of greatenergy and displayed this characteristic at an early age. He was seil-educated eatirely. Having moved into the State of Kentucky he be- caine principal oj Locust Grove Academy, and held the position during a spice of two years. He graduated at the Columbian Law College, in Wastington, D.
