Stocks to-day were aguin so irregular that tt is impossible to indicate the course of the market or intetligently describe other ‘shan passing events, The operators who are ‘long’? were quite as much demoralized as those who are “short” of stocks, and there was nothing, from the beginning to the close of tie market, that af- forded practical encouragement to either side, The generally expressed opinion is that prices are going lower, because, as it is alleged, tne com- mercial condition of the country is not one that ‘warrants an urtificial advance, [t as been given but that certain stocks would move upward, aud on the strength of the announcement consider. able purchases have been made. Frivay, June 4—6 P, M. Commerce still drags, but business duriag the current week has perceptibly increased in several branches of trade. There has been even creater irregularity than usual in some of the markets, but taken as a whole there is cause for congratula- tion. One of the most cheering, if not the most cheering, events of the week Is the re- vival of the export trade in_ cereals, During many months this hranch of business had been inastate of stagnation, while prices of late had fallen weok after week without inducing the least indication of any inclination to purchase beyond the limits of Actual necessities. Bat during the current week there hs been a very fair movement in both wheat and corn, the market has been quite well sustained, and some ad- established on tho extreme low current a week ago. The movement undoubtedly have been more active had not the rates of freight and vessels for charter ad- vanced so materially as to prevent the filing of » num- prices ber of orders and necessitated @ reduction on Friday. | | Corn has sold quite freely during the week, but prices have remained comparatively steady, there being & ma- terial discrepancy between steamer and sail. The most radical fluctuations have taken piace in the prices of the hog product, almost without exception, which are de- cidedly lower. Pork and lard have been _un- settled all the week, and prices have declined almost every day. Wool has ruled quiet and there has been ‘no improvement in the mar- ket.
