FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIML + Stocks Still Depressed and Irregular—The Contest Between Panama and Pacific Mail, MONEY ON CALL 21-2 AND 3 PER CENT. Gold 116 1-8 and Firm-—Another Large Shipment. ALL STREBT, } ay 14—6 P.M. After stating in general terms the fact that the Stock market was to-day again sudject to depres- sion and Muctuation little remains 10 besaid. The greatest activity was snown in Pacific Mail, which opened at 4134 and sold down to 40, but subse- quently recovered to 41's and ended at 40%. The cause assigned for this weakness is the failure of the negotiations with Panama and the possibilty hat the latter will make arrangements for the transfer of freight in its own steamers. Panama, however, suffered more than any otner stock and | fell down to 138, a decline of 644 per cent from the last quotation yesterday, but later rallied vo 141%. Erie was likewise active to the extent of about | 60,000 shares and receaad from 2834 to 2734, closing at273{. The report of the directors will be tound elsewhere, Owing to ruimous competition, the decrease jn earnings for the nine months — ls about $2,200,000. The reduction In ex- | penses for the year is* said to be $1,800,000, making the net loss about $400,000. The Qoating debt including loans secured and Unsecured ts placed at $2,000,000, As already tn- dicated arrangements have been made to borrow $500,000 to aldin the forthcoming payments of interest. Rock Island deciined from 104% to 10354, ou the statement that the company would Probably issue a million or more of bonds or stocks | Jor the purpose of buliding an additional fifty miles | of road to their Washington lands. Pripay, May 4—6 P. M, The trade movement during the business week | | Which nas virtuaily closed wita Friday, was char- acterized by the same general /eatures of dulness | and irregularity which have marked the greater | almost . equal partof the time for many weeks past, business | im nearly all branches being extremely | quiet, and the markets, for the most part, tending in buyer’s tavor, ‘The spirit of speculation seems to have become pretty thoroughly exorcised. At all events, it has not been manifest in any conspicuous degree during the week under review, the bulk ot the transactions consummated from day to day having been mainiy to mect the cur | remt necessities of the trade. There was scarcely ever less export demand than at present, and only a few of ‘the principal commoaities nave been sought after to | any extent, Breadstuifs and provisions have apparently not been wanted at the current prices, while, in view of | the smali supphes at hand, holders have | not felt inclined to lower their pretensions — very materially, The same remarks apply with force to aPticles of import, us, iron. wool, drugs hides, &c., having ruled very quiet. Business'in breatsiuits’ has’ been, circuinscribed by the scarcity of supplies, the comparative firmness of holders and the indifierence ot shippers, whose timits | Continue beiow the current prices, ava of course do not | Being purely speculative, | vessels for charter, Amit of business save on a lower basis. the erratic movenn tunued ail chrough the week, the general teadéncy, how ever, having been toward d lower basis, until to-day, when both pork end lard were considerably higher, under a specilative movement rhe markets were gen on ‘Change flour dull bat was wanted to some extentand with small offerinys better prices were realized, though business was hght.
