WALL STREET, } WEDNESDAY, May 6—6 P.M ‘The stock market to-day acted tn @ manner that was not calculated to elicit the confidence of either bulls or bears. A decitne in Union Pacific and Western Union, a temporary and not impor- ‘tant gain in Lake Shore and rie, attended by re- action, a steadiness In Wabash that by some was regarded af purely artificial, and made merely for ‘the purpose of marketing \he stock—these were among the léading inciients of speculation which collectively forbid anything like a correct diagno- sis, A review of prices shows that they were nearly all sympathetically weak and irregular, THE RANGE OF PRICES to-day requires but littie description, The only se- ourity that showed prompt strength at the open- img and general firmness througbout the day was ‘the new District of Columbia three-sixty-five bond which opened at 7434 and advanced to 75%. Buv- sequently there was @ reaction incident to realization on the part of those ho, haveng purchased at 70, were content with the prolits, and a close at 74% a 74%- The sales amounted to about 874,000. Western Union sold at 803¢ and down to 79, the closing price. Erie moved up from 29% to 30%, but euded at the opening figure. Wabash advanced from 12% to 13, and closed at 12%. Lake Snore sold up to 714 and closed at 70%. Northwest changed from 41% to 4134 a41%4, Hanninal and St, Joseph fell off to 24%. St. Paul closed wt 3%.
