SE I } MAY DAY. The People Who Move and Why They Move. HOUSEHOLD MISERIES. The City Ordnance and the Ex- tortions of Cartmen. To-day the trouble begins—indeed, for the matter of that it begun last week, judging from the innumerable cartloads of household goods moving to and fro throughout the city during the past few days. [t ts a strange custom, this annual Migration, and as it appears to be indigenous to the soil there is no knowing how long it may be perpetuated. Some during the twelve months already gone have fattened on big contracts, and, no longer content with humble surroundings, aspire to brown stone fronts and thetr concom- itant inxuries; some move for convenience sake, or because their landiord’s memory was de- fective in the matter of certain tmprove- ments he had promised a year ago; some because rent with them was not to be in- cluded in thelr annual expenditure, while others upon whom financial disaster has fallen are eompeilea to surrender thelr cherished homes and seek the chitly atmosphere of a strange boarding house or the cheerless comfort of a “two pair back.” There is yet another class, and by far the ‘most numerous, who await this ROVING SEASON with feelings of unalloyed satisfaction, These are for the most part the denizens of the crowded ten- @ment houses, Perhaps there have been little ‘Umpleasant dealings during the year, and that neighbors on the third and Jourth floors could not Meet in the mutual hallway without hard words, Belligerent dames are apt to cause trouble all round, and who knows but that many a pitcher or saucepan has been employed as a correctional instrument in the hands of rival beauties t) settle family ‘euds? It 1s just as well, then, that these should part, and let us hope that no biue-coated oMcial will be culled upon to mar the pleasure of their separation, lt will tuus be seen that the moving part of the population are actuaied by different motives in changing their places of abode.
