GOVERNMENT BONDS FIRM. WALL STREET, } Fripay, April 23- 6 P. M, it was generally remavked to-day as a@ curious coincidence that many railway securities bearing the name ‘I’acific” were more active and higher vhan usual. For the purpose of iilustrating we quote Kansas Pacific as selling on new business at '26 8 254 a 27 a 2642544. Union Pacific bonds ad- anced, ani the common stock reached the high- it price in its bhistory—to wit, 78%, the opening price being 764g and the closing figure 78}f. Mis- jourt Pacific opened at 4924 aud rose to bLaS2@ a 6234, Closing at 5134. Atlantic and Pacific pre- Merred opened at 15 and advanced 10 16%, closing tat 15%. The two stocks last named are closely ‘dentifed, The Atlantic and Pacific Company has, we are informed, agreed to guarantee quarterly ‘dividends 0: 1'¢ per cent for three years on Mis- Sourl Pacific, and after the 1st of July, 1875, to guarantee dividends attne rate of 6 per cent, with @ 7 per cent obligation ever after, The ‘Yength of Missouri Paciflo 1s 28% miles and its leased lincs aggregate about 128 miles. Atlantic ‘and Pacific Telegraph wi jteady and ranged trom 26% to 27. Pacific Mall sold at 4475 @ 45, and ended at 44%. Consideravle comment was caused by the movement tn Kansas Pacific, which 18 ascribed to agencies. set at work vy the Union ‘Pacific Corporation; but those wio are interested ‘tn Hannibal and St. Joseph find lirtie enconrage- ment in the new arrangement, inasmuch as trame may be forced in another direciion and avery depressing effect be exerted on the secarity last wamed, Thus far its earnings are not described as favorabie. Reference was yesterday made in this column to THE NEW ARRANGEMENT Detween Punama, Pacific Mall and the overland roads, The contract will not be sigaed unti! to- morrow, buc Meanwhile we are enavied to publisn the following details as the substantial basis of ‘the agreement:— 1. It is proviaed that the overland roads and ‘Pacific Muli guarantee to Panama their original demana of $40,000 per month, whether the same be earned or not, This secares to Panama an In- crease in its dividend paying power (which may be added to its European and South American Dusiness) of from twenty to twenty-four per cent. 2. 1% 18 understood that henceforth opposi- tion between the respective I'nes shall cease, and cominerce by land and sea be so managed as that each party to the contract will enjoy fairly | the profits attaching to the new combination. 3, ‘kach company 1s required to take care of its in- dividual interests, and the contract ts lerminabie on thirty days’ notice from either pirty, From the toregoing exhibit it would appear as tf the Vanama corporation were to re- celve the lion's share; but, according to the mew schedule, Union Pacific will secure, ft 1s estimated, an advance of $5,000,000 per annum over its former schedule rates, 11 is this act, doubtless, which has 1aduced tue Panama poople to enlorce their demand fora proportionate share of these large earpings. ‘What effect may be felt in Pacific Man at the re- sult of tuis agreement is not yet known.
