The principal card to-day im the speculative market was Pacific Mail, which, opening at 43%, quickly began to show the effect of a pressure up- | word, Tbere was no meeting of the directors, | and no rumors of @ settlement of the diMculties between them and the Panama people, yes the buying was very general, and the price advanced — to 44%, which was the closing figure. The Green Investigaung Committee—aldermen Purroy, Billings and Shandiey—held a meeting yesterday aiternoon. The first witness sworn was Mr. George ©. Moses, who testified that be was a lawyer, alsoa notary pubiic; he cnew Mrs, Uda; an affidavit shown to him was in the handwriting, he thought, of aMr. Hodges auc signed by Mre. Uda; it had been sworn to before him. Mr. Oharles H. Hodges, a lawyer, testified that he was counsel for Mr, Porta, who claimed to be the inventor of the aerial ladder; there was a co- partnership between Mrs, Uda and Mr,’ Porta, the contract being thas they suould get patents out in America and England for the jaader, and that they should share the profits; in April, 1874 he was instructed to tina cut what, if ary, contract had been entered into between the Fire Department and Mrs, Uda, and he tound that there Was 4 contract between them by which the de- partment agreed to pay $25,000 for the right ta this several persons, he said, put forward ciaima that they were the mventors of the ladver; there was foally a disagreement between Mr, Porta and Mrs. Uda, and through the instramentallty of the Spanish Consul an order was obtained that the Comptrolier suouid pay the money to Porta, or, if not to him, to no one else; the witness had had several conversations with Mrs, Uda alter this, aad sbe stated once to nim that Mr. Greea had re- fused to recognize her claim; that she had em ployed Ormsby & Shaw to compel Mr. Green t¢ pay her and that Green had met them with the do fence that the patent did not belong to Porta, and was not worth anything anyhow; om the 12th of September, 1874, Mrs, Uda made an arrangement with William B.
