FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, | The Stock Market Active and Unsteady. GOLD FIRM AT 115 1-8. ‘Money on Call 2 a 21-2 Per Cent— * The Foreign Market. GOVERNMENTS FIRM. WALL STREET, } Taunspay, Apri 15—6 P, M. The action of the stock market during the past two or three days has been so eccentric and so entirely different from the expectations of the | 10) mass of opgrators, especially those who deal in small jovs, that real business hi ehecked and outside orders largely curtailed. True, on paper, the number of shares daily re- ported as changing hands appears to indicate considerable activity, but there are not a few who plaim that they observe manipulations in the | 1X Btock Exchange that are strongly suggestive of | matched orders. On the other hand, reaction would seem to be natural after sucha sharp ad- | vance aud strong market as have been experi- | enced, and realization would tend to depre: prives. It is more than likely, also, that antmpor- | 3 tan‘ short interest has veen © ed, the effect of which is to establish lower Mgures and give to the market a temporary aspect of weakn That the street has been thoroughly loaded with securi- ties is beyond question, and the opportunity has been taken to sell when figures were at their best. THE SPECULATIVE SITUATION to-day was as follows:—Soon alter the opening | Blocks were heavy and lower, St. Paul common weceding to 37% and the prelerred from 59 to 58, | Union Pacific from 703s to 69%. The directors of the Panam. Railroad Company hell no meeting to- q@ay. There was a meeting of the Executive ana Finance Comwitiees, but nothing but routine Duciness was transacted. The relatiouship be- ‘tween this corporation and Pacific Mail are said 10 ve uncneng2d, which probably accounts for the Arregularity of the iatier. THE SALES TO-DAY of active stocks amounted to about 200,000 rhares, nd were principally made as toliows:—New York Central and Hudson, 420; Erie, 56,000; Lake Shore, 10,800; Northwestern, 15,800; do, preferred, 400; Rick Island, 1,300; Pacific slail, 35,300; St. Paul, 10,900; do. preferred, 200; Oblos, 2,300; Wesiern Union, 11,000; Wabash, 2,000; Union Pacific, 44,000, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES.
