The former advanced on a fictitious basis and the latter declined, in obedience to the be- hests of the confidence operators. It was given out that the premium on precious metal would be advanced on account of the Ger- man trouvles, and the gravity of these rumors were supplemented by private despatches, Ac- cordingly gold advanced to 115% a 115%; the Spanish and Cuban merchants rushed tn to bay and to cover their short contracts, but were met by blocks of long gold, and the premium declined to 115, nocwithstanding @ despatch was received from Europe in which it was stated that a war cloud appeared on the peaceful horizon. The merchants would do well to look upon the situation calmly; buy the gold they need as their Wants demand It and leave the speculators to their devices.
