FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, (Lively Day in the Stock Market—Exeite- ment and Fluctuations—Large Transactions, GOLD ADVANCED TO 117. eA Money on Call Loans Stronger---An At- tempted “Squeeze.” phase Ee WALL SrREer, } MoNDAY, Marea 29—6 2. Mf Not for Many mouths has there been seen such excitement on Wail street a3 Wg8 observable to- day, Atthe opening there was a moderate ex- Wbition of strength. This was followed by a sharp decline, with fluctuations and subsequent recov- ery, during which, under the lead of Union Pacific, which reached the highest potutin its Tecent advance, nearly all stocks showed firm- bess and invited investment, Suddenly an ex- tremely jeverish tecling was developed, and within an hour of the close it became evident that she speculative mauia was giving Way to sover teason and that tue owners of stock bad begua ihe process of realization, Careful observers of he course of prices let the market se- verely alone from the opening hour, tne wmosphere even (nen being Juli of Impend- mg danger; yet hundreds were caught m the decline, and tm their losses paid the penalty Mf an overweeuing confidence in tne future. Among the changes of the street it was noticeable ‘kat some of the low-priced securities remained trim, and even advanced. Tue teeing with reler- ‘Mice to these is still hopeful, and it is believed that shey will follow any well founded upward move- ment that may be established, THE TRANSACTIONS OF THE DAY were remurkavle, amounting to about 480,000 shares, Tis is the largest business that bas been recorded during the same period for many years. The principal dealings may be distributed as /ol- lows:—New York Ceutral and Audsvn, 745: Erie, 92,600; Lake Shore, 13,000; Northwestern, 28,100; fo. preferred, 2,200; Ros Island, 2,500; Pacific Maal, 76,000; St Paul, 14,600; do, preferred, 2,600; Dhios, 35,000; Western Union, 75,000; Wabasa, 88,000; Union Pacific, 115,000; C., C. and L. C., 2,000. THE RANGE OF PRICES was doubtless amected by the sharp advance in gold aud paper currency, the jormer having ad- vanced tol percent, aud the latter to 1-320f 1 percent per diem for use. The notable rise of the flay was in Union Pacific which moved from 62 to 38%, from which there was a su.lden decline to 5, with closing prices at 66%. The next greatest rise was in New Jersey Southern, mbich suddenly moved from 54% to 10%. fhe nal rates were 7. Wabash advanced from 44 to 16%, then quickly receded to 14%, at which Sgure the close was made, Hannibal and St, Jo- sep common was active, with a range trom 26% to 30% The preferred stock advanced from B54, to Erie opened in @ tempting manner at 35%, but fel! off to 31%; after varicus changes. Atiantic and Pacific Telegraph was aiso wore thao usualy active, moving from 24}¢ to 26. Obio and Mississippi rose to 29%, but de- clined at the close lper cent. At the opening Western Union stood at 7 at the close it wason the market at 75%. Paciflc Mail in tue sarly hours was active around 45a 45%. Later, sowever, it receded to 42% a 4274, 2t which price iteclowed. The highest in Northwest was 46%, but the stock closed at 45%;. Lake Shore Jell off from 75 t0 7334. Rock Island ranged trom 106% to 105 bt. Paul common declined trom 3845 to 364; a 36%,. ., C. and 1. C. improved 1 per cent, but was a par- | tictpant in the general reaction, New York Cen- trai wold throughout the day at 101. Tne other changes will be found below. The events of the duy were interesting because unusual, and they Coustitute an episode of the Stock Exchange whieh, unless overshadowed by weigatier expe- rieaces, are likely to be.ome a part of the salient | memories of the street. ADVANCE AND DECLINE, Compared with the closing prices of Saturday the following are the changes at the end of the market towaay :— AbvVaNCE—Atlantic and Pacific, preferred, 1%; J. 44; Delaware New York Central, 3; C., C. aud 1. and Lackawanna, Mississippi, ; Wabasn, %; Pacific, 4% tic and Pacific Telegraph, +4; gold, %. Deciinze—Erie, 2%; Hauuibal, aud 8 2; Lake Shore, 1%; Northwestern, i, Kock island, 1; St. Paul, Northwestern, preferred, %. Rock Island, Milwaukee and St. Paul, Mil. and st, Paul pret Mississippi... and Western, 111% 11% fle if 62 Western Uni 76% Atlantic and Pac 24 Pacifie Mali........ 42 THE MONEY MARKET Was cousiaerabiy disturoed by an advance iate in she day on cail joans to 7 per cent, and near the close to 1-32 and 1-16 per diem. These rates, how- ever, May be regarded as artificial and tempo- fary. They are simply part of the pending specu- fauon, aud are not likely to be maintained. They do not illustrate tacts. The early loans on cail Were made at 4and 6 percent, Foreign exchange Was dull and lower, receding trom 4.8134 to 4.17 3¢ for bankers’ sixty «lay stering and from 4.8534 to 62 for demand, actual vusiness, THR GOLD MARKET Was likewise exceedingly interesting, from the fact that the price advanced from 116% at the cpening to 11%, with a close at 116%, Sud borrowing rates at one time strong and Steady at 1 per cent per diem. Subsequently, Rowever, the latier declined to 3% per cent. The effect was quickly apparent both upon stoces dad foreign eXchanze. The clique in gold are exhibiting great boldness, notwithstanding the redemption by the Treasury of more tuan $1,200,000 of the jast called bonds, and are evi. dently making an effort to compel merchants to Duy ‘thelr commodity at present, if cot bigher prices. TODD, 95 Liberty street WALL STREET NOTES, ! AN OLD TIME EXCITEMENT IN STOCKS AND GOLD—A SMALL FAILURE—DEATH OF 4N OLD BANKER—FLURRY IN THE MONEY MARKET. One of the most memorable of days since the Panic of 1873 18 to be recorded in the stock market yesterday. Tne fvctuattons in stocks were wild, | but, happily, the tendency was’upward in the early morning, Unton Pacific ched the uppree cedented price of 6844, amid the wildest excites ment, but as it advanced the otner fancy stocks were coming down; and when it suddenly dropped to 65 there Wasa Stampede in all stares, attended | with great excitement, To add to the danger of the situation a FAILURE WAS ANNOUNCED on the Stock Exchange. ‘The house in trouble proved to be tiat of Messrs, B. G. Smith & Co, Who had sent @ notice to the board that they were unable to meet their contracts. Tueir llabll- ities are said to be small, and the cause of their Jaiiure The street had & shock yesterday in the an nouncement of the sudden death of Mr, Lazaruy Hallgarten, which occurred late >unday evening, at bis residence in this city, alter a brief ilinesa, Mr, Hallgartea has been for years the head of the promment banking house of Hallgarten & Co., late Haligarten & Herzfeld, aud for integrity and finan cial ability was justly regarded very migniy amon, | his associates, aud his decease leaves a void that will be deeply elt. . Mr. Win. Orcon, President of the Western Union Teiegrapl: Company, sailed tor Europe on Satur day. It 13 Understood that Mr, Urcon has gone out mainty on business oO! the International Ocean legrap Company and its relattons with con- necting cables in the Gut to contract fora uew cabl; tove laid between Key West and Panta Kosa, Fla., woich, when laid, will duplicate t! eutire telegraph system of the International Com- any. i Ameeting of PANAMA AND PACIFIC MAIL DIRECTOR? was held yeste:day for the purpose of adjusting | the taruly of ireight and for other business ap- | pertaining to the new arrangement between the | overland rauroads and Pacifle Maul. It was iound impossible to arrive at harmonious conclusions and It was bell-ved there were serious didiculnes in the way of adjustment, ‘tne HERALD representative interviewed one of the prom- iment officers of tne Pacifle Math Com. pany, aud was* given to ~understand that notwithstanding the rose-colored reports that had been put forty lately it wonld provably be “war to the kniie’? on tie part oi the steamship company in drder to secure their rights im the combination, ‘Tuere have been three reports put forth as to the financiai standing of this company, One last year by Messrs. Sage, Scott, Stebvins and others; one by Mr. U. U, Niebunr, the then treas urer of the company, and one by the managing director. Stocknolders look anxiously for the fourth report of Pacific Mall in order to discover what condition their property is in or whether they have been shamefully bought and sold by heartless stock jobbers ‘Yhe resignation o: United States Treasurer F. 8 Spinner was the subject of some comment tn finan- cial circles, but nothing positive was known as to the causes of his action. A FLURRY IN THE MONEY MARKET added to the disturbing elements in Wall street yesterday. Money at one time was one-sixteeuth per cent per diem bid, but later dropped to siz and weven per cent per annum. DEPARTMENT OF PARKS. BECENT DISCHARGE OF WORKINGMEN—THE CON- STRUCTION FUND AND THAT BLUNDER IN BOOK- KEEEPING—THE COMMISSIONERS’ SIDE OF THE CASE. ‘The blunder of the clerk in the Department of Public Parks, by which a large sum of money was transfered wrongiully from one iund to another some time ago, has created so much talk in polite cal circles that the Park Commissioners them- selves are not a litle alarmed. In view of tag fact that the Commissioners of Accounts are, under Aldermanic order, to luvestigate the accounts of the department in & lew days the following stat® ment made by the Commissioners Will be found of interest. Their side of the “blunder”? story is as foilows :- ‘The dismissal or suspension by this department of 127 meu on the 24th of March, who were empioved in com- xhaustion of the struction, In consequence of the moneys ropriated tor construction purposes. hus been ihe occasion of a charge of & misapplication of the | Appropriacden of the departinent to other purposes thaz thoss for which they wece made, there is and has been no foundation for such @ state- ment.
