The stock market to-day was the theatre of un- | Gsual interes’, several securittes veretofore idie having advanced with such rapidity as to startle even the oldest habituvs of the street, Union Pacific, Pacific Mail, Krie, Western Union, Rock Island, St, Paul and Northwestern common, all participated in the upward movement, and, al- though it appeared, to use the parlance of the Street, that ‘‘the market was moving too fast” to be healthy, the undertone that was exhibited en- couraged large buying and induced quarters of the country fresh orders, the broker interest hopeiul, ana speculation for the moment Was as earnest as it was profitable. Prices have reached a stage which has iorced all but the millonnaire ‘shorts’ to cover, and it was rumored that even some of the latter were endeuv- oring to make terms. Tis may account for the letting down of the market toward the close, when a sharp reaction was manilest.
