PINANCTAL AND COMMERCIAL, A Bad Bank Statement---The Legal Reserve Largely Reduced. GOLD 1147-8 A 1151-2. Money Easy on Call at 21-2 and 3 Per Cent. BONDS GENERALLY FIRM. Notwithstanding many adverse influences, the stock market to-day was frm and encouraging to those who have made purchases in anticipation of higher prices, There were failures in Canada, a large failure in Europe, and a bad bank statement at home. Yet in the face of these incidents, which, under other conditions would have pro- duced demoralization and weukness, stocks of all kinds were well upheid and indicated on the part of their bojders faith in the future, THE STOCK MARKET Jew comments need be made. There was the ‘Usual speculative handling of securities, and the quick vurns resulted from @ desire to realize Profit. Iv was observable, however, that a strong undertone existed, and that prices were gener- ally firmer than are usual at the close of the week, especially one that has been so fuil of fever- ishness as that which has just closed, THE RANGE OF PRICES was indicative of the fresh speculative feeling. Rock Island, which has heretofore been steady for months, advanced from 105 to 10534. On the Ist of March it Sold as low as 102%, Lake Shore opened at 74, receded to 735 ana closed at the latter price. New Jersey Central was steady at 11034, Delaware and Lackawanna at 111} a 111%, Panama at113}4. Hannibal and St. Joseph moved from 23% to 24%; do., preferred, soid up to 324. Union Facific advanced from 473 to 4814, ending at 43%. Northwest common from 4534 to 45%, closing at 45%. The preierred stock sold up to 59%, and closed at 5834. Pacific Mail sold at 3914 0 39 a 3954 a 3934. Erie ranged from 2714 to 2754, and closed at 27%. Ohio and Mississipp! began at 265% ana gavanced to and closed at 27%. Wabash pold at 144 13% a14; St. Paul common at 35% a 25% 93534, The prelerred stock ended at 56%. The transactions ia C., C. & I, ‘C. were small, and the prices remained at 5}ga6. Western Unton ‘Was active and moved from 76% to 76%, closing, however, at 76%. Atiantic and Pacific Telegraph ‘Was steadily quoted at 22/4.
