FINANCLAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Firm and Prices Higher. GOLD AGAIN 115. Changes in the Pacific Mail Direction. * BONDS GENERALLY STEADY. WALL STREKT, } WEDNESDAY, March 3—6 P, M. There can be no question that a sharp change has taken place in the temper of the stock mar- ket, There is a stronger assertion of confidence; Operators are buying more freely; prices have advanced and appear to be well sustained, aud the course of speculation is strongly sympathetic with the new influences that have been set at work. Wedo not propose to stop here ana dis- | cuss them, We have :o deal simpiy with tne | events of the day, There was much comment in connection with the reports from the Wisconsin Legislature, and the prices of the so-called granger stocks fluctuated .accordingly; but by a few who ciaimed to be in the secrets of the aisputing railroads, it was said that no decision would be reached until Saturday, Which, by the way, is announced as the day of adjournment. A buying process was man- Afested in connection with the sundry rumors, and from the strength shown at whe close it would seem that the principal operators and their triends | are in possession of information that is indicative of legislative purpose to modify the objection- | able features of the Potter law. There ts nodount | that Wallstreet will advantageously make use of the proposed amendments and that, speculatively, | certain Western securities may show a gain, THE LEADING FEATURES of the stock market to-day, measured not only by | transactions, but by discussions, were Union | Pacific and Pacific Mail. It 1s now conceded that these two parties have become one; in other words, that they have conjoined and present a common front. There are observant men, how- ever, who, remembering the weakness of the latter stock, the report of its former treasurer, tne detail of its losses and liabilities ana the misfortunes to which it is liable, do not take comiort even in the announcement that follows, to wit: That ata meeting of the direc- tion to-day Russell Sage resigned and was super- ceded by Mr. Sidney Dillon, President of the Union Pacific, us President pro. tem. of Pacific Mail; that Messrs. Talcott, Guiea ana A, S. Hatch likewise resigned, and in their places were elected Messrs. Jay Gould, D. D. Co\sea and Oliver Ames. A “durry”’ in Pacific Mal 18 counted upor in the Market asthe ress ct swe Manceurrs, but it is dificult to see what the Union Pacific Company, now the acknowledged leader of the stock mar- | ket, can gain from such a coalition. The change I i may serve a speculative purpose, out it is a nice | question whether a new set of directors of equal intelligence can surpass the efforts of their pre- decessors in the task of rescuing @ corporation {rom misfortune. THE RANGE OF PRICES TO-DAY was as follows:—Western Union opened at 75, re- ceded %, advanced to 75, fellomf to 74%, gained 7634 end closed at 7474; Lake Shore changed trom 13% to 7334 and ended at 7334; Pacific Matl opened at 88%, sold down to 88, was changeable, but finally soll at 389%. A change in Panama is intimated in connection with the im- timacy between Union Pacific and Pacific | Mail, The price to-day was lll a 111%. Erte sold at 27% a 26% a 26%.
