10 DINANCLAL AND COMMERCEAL ‘The Stock Market Still Firm and Prices ; Tending Upward. —e—— GOLD 114 3-4 A 114 5-8. ——_—e———— i Bad Bank Statement—Large Loss in the Surplus Reserve, fMONEY EASY AND BONDS SYEADY. WALL STREET, } SatuRDAY, Feb, 20—6 P. M. The recent suggestions in this column concern- Ging the probable firmness of the stock market, and a temporary change of front by speculators, @ound further confirmation to-day in geverally a vanced and stif prices, For three days steady @mprovement has thus been recorded. It ts not Matural to suppose that a movement in either @irection will ve unattended by drawbacks and weverses, It is contrary to the experience of the @treet and the manner in which stocks are manip- miated. But there ts something strangely eccen- feric in such an exnibition of strength as we have ad to-day, in the face of one of the weakest bank gtatements that has been publisned for a long ‘time. Usnally stocks nave been observed to Jweaken under induences of this character, and he exception to the rule has occurred at a time ‘when it might be least expected, and when, if @bhere was @ real desire to depress prices, the @ccasion would have been eagerly seized jor tue purpose. THE RANGE OF PIGURES ‘was as follows :—Wesiern Union opened at 72%, ad- vanced to and closed at 72%. Erie sold at 27% and @t27%, seller 16. Pacific Mail opened at 3214 and Bteadily improved to 334%. Hannibal and St. Jo- wepb opened drm at 20 and moved up to 21), end- img at 20%. The preferred stock sold at 283s, Union Pacific was very frm and active, and advanced Prom 30% to 4155. THE SALES ‘to-day amounted to 124,000 shares, which were @istributed as follows:—New York Contral and ‘Hudson River, 450; Erie, 900; Lake Shore, 4,900; wimeinnati and Pittsburg, 100; ‘5,900; Northwestern preierred, 300; Rock Island, 12,500; Pacific Mail, 26,700; St. Paul, 3,700; Ohios, 900; Western Union, 23,300; Wabash, 4,900; Union Pacific, 14,000; C., C. and I. It ‘will be observed that there is a continuation of date improvement :— ADVANCE.—Atlantic and Delaware and Lackawanna, 43 @ud St. Joseph, Lake Shore, + ; Uno und Mi ; The stocks that remained steady were C., C, gnd L.
