FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Firm— Prices Generally Higher. GOLD LOWER---114 38- Money Easy, Foreign Exchange Steady and Bonds Without Feature. Watt Street, } Farpay, Feo, 19—6 P, M. Nothing has occurred within the last twelve hours in the stock market to change the ex- pression of faith that finds general currency among the business men of Wallstreet. In the covering by those who were “short” and in the putting out of fresh lines of contracts by capital- ists who do not think it likely that prices will get away from them to a dangerous extent, there is a recognition of probabilities that may take definite shape at an early day and reward those who havo made their purchases in the face of a demoral- (zing decline. THE NEW PHASE given to the ratlroad situation by the contest be- tween the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the Pennsylvania Central may for the moment affect quotations and be used as a handle by the parties who continue to enforce lower prices. Lake Shore may suffer loss in its earnings and lose its hold upon the market as one of its sustaiming ele- ments, Wabash may even pass into the nands of & receiver, and “Wisconsin legislation’ imperil other Western enterprises; but it is diMcult to dis- cover in the general situation any cause that makes a further bear market suggestive of great success. This thought appears to have taken shape to-day, for there is not an active stock on tne list the price of which 1s not quoted higner than it was last night at the close or does not show the influence of increased confidence. THE RANGE OF FIGURES for the day was as follows:—Western Unton opened at 71%, advanced to 72% and closed at 7234. Pacific Mall moved up from 31% to 324, and ended at the last named figure.
