THREATENING ASPECT OF THE STRIKE AT THE FALL RIVBR MILLS—MASS MEETINGS OF THE STRIKERS—ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND OPER- ATIVES AFFECTED—MEETING OF THE WORKING ‘WOMEN TO-NIGHT. Fatt River, Mass., Feb. 6, 1875, The strike among the operatives of the Fall River milis stil! continues, and in some respects it is beginning to assume threatening proportions. Nearly 2,000 weavers and spinners, the most of them females, are now out, and the larger num- ber of them nave been idle for nearly a fortnight. | Several meetings have been had with the repre- sentatives of the corporauons, but no terms of | compromise have been arrived at at this time. As between the two the operatives feel that they are ahead, and it is tramsparent that the mill owners are very much annoyed @t the threatening aspect of affairs. There have | | been mone of the riotous demonstrations than usa- ally attend strikes; but still the disaffected oper- | uve '@ been industrious in presenting their | stde and thas exciting @ public sympathy in their | behalf, A mass meeting was held here this even- ing, at which there was a large attendance of the strikers and their supporters, and there will be an- other to-morrow evening, under the auspices o/ the female weavers. The speeches at the meeting to- bight were moderate and yet devermined, and | disclosed an evident feenng among the employés | to hold out for the demand which they have made. Toe ostensible purpose oi the meeting Was to raise Junes for the purpose of depleting the labor mar- | ket in Fall River, and it waa voted to continue assessments amoung the employed to pay the = penses home or elsewaere, i! they wished to g Ol 1,000 operatives. By getting « eurpius of ney out of the way itis thougnt that the manulactur- ers will be brought to terms more easliy. SENDING TO ENGLAND FOR FUNDS. Notwithstanding this siep was taken it ap- aed during the discussion that there was a feeling on the part of some to send to England for funds to sustain the strike here rather tuan bur- den the market vhere witn a lot of uuemployed, it algo appeared that support has been promised from England toward sustaining the strike, and your correspondent Was privately informed that a remittance jor this purpose will be forwarded In a few days. So faraa Fali Kiver is concerned the operatives maniiest a disposition to stand vy one anotuer, and those who ure working are con- | tributing freely ior the suppor. oi those who are | idie. How long this practical sympathy will be | extended it 18 tmpossivie to determine. Other | | manufactoring cities, however, are also contrivut- ing freely, such as New Bediord, Loweil, Law- | t | rence, Providence apd Manchester, So, taking it | | alin all, tue movement seems tor the present to ; be well backed up.
