FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Firmer and More Encouraging. ‘GOLD FIRM AT 113 1-4 A 1131-8. The Bank Statement—A Loss of Nearly $4,000,000 in Specie. MONKEY EASY ND GOVERNMENTS FIRM. WALL STREET, SaTURDAY, Jan. 30--6 P. M. I The stock market to-day was stronger and Toré encouraging to the bull side of speculation than it bas been for several weeks, A better feel- Jng prevatis, although it may prove to be only temporary, and the result of a covering process in a largely oversold condition. It is difficult to see, however, wherein consists the faith of those who are following the leaders, or to base any pre- dictions on speculative movements that are so thoroughly problematical. Still, the fact 1s not to be lost sight of, that prices nave largely declined, that the street, to use a technical word, has been “milked” almost to impovenshment, and that an opportunity is now offerea to any bold capitalist to pay and cause advance. The concentration and application of a few millions of dollars would produce such a reaction, snd there can be but little question that the Influence would be reflected in a healthful way in all departments of trade. The weakness or rot- tenneas of corporations serves a certain purpose in Making stocks go down, but damaging facts are of little avail when the determination to make them 0 up is fortified by active capital. This conciudes the first year of working freight south by rail from Cairo, The bulk of the ireight from Cairo 18 directed by rati, and is leaving the river. ‘The Southern lines are scantily supplied with roll- ing stock. Ln spite of all drawbacks the traMo is Cairo is now the centre of an established trade to and irom the South, chiefly tributary to our Ine, which is more direct than any other. Tne advantage of this rail communication over that by river has been so marked that the future of the New Orleans lines seems well assured. The pay- ment of the redemption bonds, which mature April 1, has been provided for by the gale of £500,000 of twenty-year bonds bearing interest at rails have been purchased, making 10,000 tons to be laid in the spring. The working stock of sup- plies, including 5,000 tons of steel ratis on band the 8ist December, was $1,117,892 91. The cash assets, $1,940,574. The amount of share capital and atx per cent dept. is $34,000,000, At the close of 1864 the sum of the share capital and the debt was $34,209,110. Mean- While $6,480,880 has been added to the property in outlays on the road and plant, The annual meer ing of the shareholders will be hela the last Wednesday in May. The general balance sheet shows:—Permanent expenditures in Illinois and Towa, $26,165,290; working stock of supplies, $1,117,392; gold bonds of New York and New Orleans line, assets im sinking fund against Illinois Central five per cent bond, $4,842,000; cash assets, $1,940,574 53; miscellaneous assets, $446,008 80; total, $44,511,826 91, Sbares, $29,000,000; bonds, $9,842,000; surplus, exclusive of 299,065.85 acres of land and $1,007,509 78; land notes, $5,473,608 12; surplus income of 1874, | $196,218 79.
