Asan offset to the general quiet there was considerable excitement in the coifee market over a report that a duty would be im- posed upon that article, to go into immediate | effect, Asa first resylt of the excitement prices jumped np about lc. per pound, On ‘Change flour continued dull, Wheat was also in limited de- mand, but the market was strengtbened vy the re- ceipt of more favorable advices from Europe, and better prices were bid for spring without inducing sales to any extent, Corn was lower, the market being depressed by heavy receipts, Oats were Steady. Lard was dull and easier, but there were no important changes in other provisions, Freights were stronger per steamer, but yessels for charter were taken at lower rates, Cotton met with a betier demand for spot lots and closed at rates showing no material change. ‘utare” closed quict ata slight advance. Groceries were rather quiet but firm, particulariy the market for coffee, which wi excited, and definite quotations impossible to obtain. Metals were quiet, Petroleum was dull and not essen- tially changed in value. Naval stores were quiet, and the market closed easy for both spirits and rosin. Weol was in good demand and the market firm. Whiskey ruled quiet but steady. Asuxs.—Receipts for the past three days, 58 packages, The market continued quict, with pots quoted nominal at6c., and pearls at Sic, per Ib.
