FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. as ONES ee The Stock Market Without Feature--- Prices Generally Steady. GOLD STRONG AT 112 5-8. | Money Easy on Call at 2 and 3 Per Cent. GOVERNMENT BONDS FIRM. WALL STREET, ' Saturpay, Jan, 23—6 P, M The limited amount of business in the Stock | Exchange to-day, the character of the wansac- tious made, the absence of either excitement or sharp Quctuations, leave little room Jor descrip- tive writing, In fact, the entire market appears to be on edge, as if it awaited some new influence to give it fresh impetus. It woula be too strong BD eXpression to say that there is an undertone favorable to immediate higher prices, for the large | speculators, who base their judgment on general conditions, are not satisfied with the aspects of the commercial situation and see in it few signs o€ business encouragement, and it would ve equally faulty to allege that every stock is weak because it has been made to appear so in the @gares that are quoted from day to day. Active Speculation has been for the moment enecked; frst, because of the poverty of “the street customers,” who have been recently caught on the wrong side, and, secondly, because of distrust. ‘The examples of Western Union, Lake Shore, Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph, Northwest common and Wabash have been well caiculated to terrify any but bears bred im the bone, and it 1s bat natural that a check to activity shonid have occurred, aud that there should be @ juli in the battle in order to count the Killed and wounded. Perhaps the situation can- not be more concisely described than is done in the remark of a banker, Wiio jocosely observed to- @ay, “We are bulls, sir, bulls, but we belong to the short-lorned breed.’? And this is now a very often eXpressed sentiment. It indicates an abid- ing confidence inthe vaiue of most speculative securities, hut not to a degree that makes antag- onism eltner profitably successiul or remunerative, The changes iu stocks were so slight that it is scarcely worth while to cail attention to them tn | @etail, and we therefore refer the reader to the | tables which follow. ADVANCE AND DECLINE. At the close to-day the following differences Were shown compared with the same hour yester- ig } | Drovers NEW YORK tinue very light, the aggregate now being re- ceived being barely suMcient to meet the coin ex- penses of the government, The department does not anticipate any material increase in the re- cetpts for some time to come.” “THE FOREIGN MARKET.
