The stock market to-day was alwrnately weak and strong, but closed firm. A dispusition has been shown to take advantage of existing low prices, and @ feeling 1s very general 1avorable to improvement, if or no other purpose than to en- courage despondent brokers and invite to the street afresh element, There are, of course, ex- ceptions to the rule; for, judging from the past, it seemed to be a desire for speculative purposes to depress certain stocks and to advance others; but the prevalent feeling to-day, carefully ob- serves, was strongly sympathetic with every advance. Western Union opened at 15%, advanced to 76% and ended at 76%. Pacific Mail, under the stimulus of speculation, which apparently responded to the news from headquarters concerning the changes contem- Plated and not entirely made, opened at 34%, ad- vanced to 35%, and closed at the same price. It ‘was generally understood that Mr. Eckert, one of the several superintendents of the Western Union Telegraph Company, has re- signed his position for the purpose of entering the service of the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Com- ; pany. New Yous, J To tx Epytor oy Tue Henazi seal fact oon itis high time the itention. Of the public and the press was directed vo the larce and oppressive monopoly that this country. ‘The telegraph is the most important agenc: of the Commerce of our times, and itis ot the first im: portance that its service should be rendered at the low- est cost consistent with a tair remunePation upon the true and necessary outlay of capital involved. So. tar from. this being” the case, nearly ‘the ‘euiire. tele: feniae of the country has been — absorbed one mammoth corporation, which, — feeling its monopoly,. has igsued an enormous ck tor merely nominal considerations, and demands that its ousiness shal) be conducted at rates that will leave an eight or ten per cent dividend upon itarocklessly “watered” capital It is probably much wthin the truth to say that $12,500,000 honest outlay would provide a system of lines as extensive as that owned by the Western Union Company and much better equipped; and yet that corporation has encumbered itself witn a capital stock of $41,0,U00, besides u round bonded debt oon brings up its paper capital to close upon $60,000,000. Let us see how this moustrous shaw has been igen ted :— Seventeen years ago the Western Union had a modest capital of $58,700. ight years later the stock had ex. panded to the magnificent proportions of $22,000 000, of which $3,322,000 Was issued in the purchase of comp: lines, while near'y $18,.40,U00 wus issued ins dividends. What actual value this enormous dilution may be supposed to have represenied can be judged from the fact that the stock 3 not then worth in the market 25 cents on the doliar. ‘this, however, was the first atiempt to spread out an immense paper capital which should hereafter afford a plausible pretext tor imposing on a public an oppressive tariff of Its step toward monopoly was Umted States Company, for purpose Sine at of stock was issued, an amount certainly five times) the true value of the pve na Next came the absorption of the American ‘elegraph Company. The siock of this company was almost as much initiated as thit of the Western Union and amounted to $3,833,100; and yet to procure the line, and thereby remove the one remaining obstacle to an ab- solu’e monopoly, $11,333,100 of Western Union stock wag to sccurs possession of the line. ‘This is the in- } fated thing that our railroad king has taken under his | wing, supposing, apparently, that the charm of his name will lead people to believe there is something solid about it.
