IMPORTANT QUESTION CONCERNING ee TRADES UNIONS. In November, 1873, James Doyle, a member of ‘Whe Society of Operative Masons, was expelled for ‘Working for less than ‘society wages.’ He went before the society and proved his innocence o/ the eharge, when, he claims, there was sprung upon him another charge of having gone in on 9 “struck job.” This charge, he says, was made against him without due notice, as required by the by- jaws. Notwithstanding this the society expelled fim. ‘Thereupon bis attorneys, hiessrs. nd Gearon, applied to Judge Donon Special ry who granted a writ oi mandamus reinatat- ing bim imto membersnip. Matthew P. Thomas Conley and two otber pilots some time since built a boat and applied to the Pulot Commis- aloners to have the same numbered and added to the Sandy Hook pilot boats. This the Pilot Com- Missioners refused to do, having passed a bylaw jimiting the nomber of boats. Upon this. applica- tion was made to Judge Davis, at Supreme Court, Chambers, ior a peremptory mandamus against the Pilot Commissioners, directing them to add this boat to tne list of pilot boats. it was urged for the application that the new boat was strong Rud seaworthy, whereas most of the boats now in Use are, as claimed, old and unseaworthy. Judge Davie gave his decision in the case yesterday, de- nying the application. He held that the Commis- sioners have tue power to iimit the number of pltos boats by bylaws; that. the same are obliga- ry Upon the pilots, and that upon the facts ap- pes om the return &@ mandamus could not be aa THE CUSTOM HOUSE SMUGGLING OASE.
