Mere Cu 10 Broadway. _SPEOIAL } NOTICES, BY > i] g a JUDICIOUS ESTMENTS, LVTIHIIIUAI THE INDUCEMENTS OFFERED BY THE PUBLIC LIBRARY OF KENTUCKY AT LOUISVILLE, III The history of the Public Library enterprise ts quite aromarkable one. It had wonderfal success from its very incipiency. Attempts had often been made to found a library in Louisville which should be adequate to the uses of that growing city, but all of them had proved signal failures, It was reserved for Colonel R.7, Durrett and his associates, all of whom were prominent gentlemen of the commonwealth, to hit upon a plan by which a library could be organized and setin motion without severe cost to any individual,or set of individuals, Accordingly, a charter was cheer. fully granted by the Legislature to the incorporators, whose names are set out therein, togive five musical and dramatic entertainments at which they might diss tribute by lot to patrons of ose entertainments a por- tion of the proceeds arising irom the sale of tickets of admission. In compliance with this four of these enter- tainments have already been given, The first of these distributed to ticket nolders $192,500; the second, $375,000; the third, $50,000, and the fourth, $1,125,000. Al of these sums have already been, patd in full, and, with the surplus earnings, the Public uibrary, as it now stands, has been called into being, and 1s now the pride and boast of the State, The sift concerts, with the ex- ception of the first, haye been under the control of ex- Governor THUMAS E. BRAMLETTE, to whose wide reputation and great skill in management their success is mainly due. They have ail been conducted with the utmost fairness, and every ticket holder, from the least to the greatest, has received an equal share of attention. ‘The surplus arising from those concerts has purchased a splendid building in the very heart of the most fash- fonable street in the city, which Is patd for. it has provided two lecture hails; one of which isthe finest in the West. It bas secured a magnificent lbrary, which is surpassed by few, if any, in the United States; it has organized an art gallery anda museum, both of large proportions, and has made all theso things as free to the people as the air they breathe or the water which flows from their springs. N . No oppressive rules fetter the student or the mere pleasure-loving reader. Polite attendants wait upon his wants, and cosey, comfortable rooms, carpeted, furnished and lighted, invite bis presence. The 27th of February, when the last concert is to take place, is near at band, and all who wish to aid in this grand enterprise, wiih also the chance of a sudden fortune appended, should delay no longer. All the business connected with the Fitth Concert is under the management of ex-Governor THOMAS E, BRaMLETTE, at Louisville, Ky. > vgHIIL | FROM EX-GOVERNOR BRAMLETTE, | “As agent for the fifth and last Gift Concert of the Pub- lic Library of Kentucky iny tlme and care will be de- voted to the management and control of this undertak- ing from the sale of the first ticket to the payment of the last gift. “It will be my duty to see that the money arising from the sale of tickets is deposited in the Farmers and Drov-. ers’ Bank, to remain fer the payment of the offered gifts; tosee that the drawing is fairly conducted and that those who draw gifts are promptly paid on presen- tation of their tickets, and this auty I shall perform to the best of my ability. Knowing the object to be a good one and the means lawful, I st ail do all Ican to make itthe success it deserves and which, I doubt not, it will attain, THE FIFTH AND LAST GRAND GIFT CON- CERT WILL POSITIVELY TAKE PLACE ON THE 27TH OF FEBRUARY N&XT, OR THE MONEY RE- FUNDED. | | THO E.
