THE ERIE RAILWAY. THE ASSAULTS ON THE MANAGEMENT OF THY COMPANY. To Tae EpiToR OF THE HERALD:— It is impossible to look back upon the manage- ment of the Erie Railway under Jay Gould and his associates without a feeling of humiliation, It seems almost incredible now that one of the most important corporations in the country could have been seized by a gang of adventurers and held jor three years In deflance of the law through the aid of corrupt courts and venal legislatures, Whea we recall tue disgracetul transactions of those days at this distance of time we can better under- stand than we then could how seriously they must Dave stained our character und shaken our credit abroad. The overthrow of the Gould direction was an event the importance of which extended beyond the immediate interests involved. It was not alone that* the stockholders of Erie obtained possession of their property, unjustly Withheld from them; that @ great highway of commerce was rescued from hauds that were plundering and would have destroyed it. The ejection of Gould ana his associates was a triumpa | of law—a proof that the American people are pre- pared to iuifll their ob'iigations in good tatth. Its effect was not only to save a road whose inde. pendent existence 1s of the most vital consequence to New York and to the West, but to restore con- fidence in all American securities tn foreign mar- kets and to re-establish the national credit, if the panic of last year bad found us with Gould's grasp stillon the throat of Erie its consequences woula have been far more disastrous than they were, The conspiracy baMed in 1872 has not been abandoned. The plot for the plunder and destruce tion of Erie is a8 steadily pursued to-day a4 it was when Gould and Fisk held their saturnalias in the Grand Opera House. It shows itself im the pers sonal assaults made on all who have been con- cerned in the management of the Erie Railway since the downiall of Gould, apd tn the mise representations of the business affairs of the company constantly appearing tm various jour- nals throughout the country. A railroad, al- though the property of 1:8 stochhoiders, holds important relations to the public, and 18 Manage. meni 1s properly vpen to criticism. No tair board 01 directors would object to such criticism if made 1M the interests Of the stockiiolders or of the pub- lic. But the assaults upon tie reiormed direction of Erie are not induced by regard for the interests of either, Dor bave they ior their opject the im- provement ol the Management of the road. Om the contrary, they ave tue work of Jay Gould and his sateilites, Who seek to undermine the public | contidence in the present Erie direction for the sole purpose Of depreciating the stock, aud in the hope that through the promotion of dissension and disasier they may again obtain control of tae road, ‘his 18 80 evident that the attacks should carry with them their own refutation, Not one of them cmanates irom 4 disinterested or irtendly and the clear intent of all of them, withvut exception, Is to damage the pecu vo | interests aud to embarrass tne practical manage. ment of the road. ‘The batteries first opened om Governor Dix were (rected against Mr. Watson immediately he became president of the road, and are now turned upon Mr. Jewett. Mr. Jewett's | Successor, il he should have one to-morrow, would in like manner be the Object of attack, Whoever he might be. A director has only to display energy and ability in the interest of the road to draw upon himseii the abuse of these honest criticisers of Erie management, When the Erie road was rescued from the hands | of Jay Gouid all necessity Jor concealment and de- ception ceased. ‘The ovject of those into- whose hands the management passed was to replenish tne treasury, improve the condition and business of the road, and secure restitution of the com- pany’s property as far as possible. Lawlessness, irresponsibility and pillage were at an end, If some errors of poitcy were made they were almost unavoidable in the extremity to | which the financial affairs of the company had been reduced by the Gould direction, ‘he valua- ble result of the reform has been to re-establisn the character and credit ol the road, and it 18 just this result that the conspirators who desire to re- store lawlessness, irresponsibility and pillage are jaboring to undo, The business o: the railroads all over the country has been injured by the commer: cial depression {oliowing tue panic or last year; but that cannot be justly made a cause of attack upon the management of any road, The Erte re- ports show that the working expenses have becn economized without inipatae the efiictency ot the service, and this 18 enough to prove that the road 1s now managed capably and honestly ana that the revival oi business alone is needed to secure a nandsome exuibit of earnings. It 18 also sutisiactory 0 Jearn that a ciean financial baiance sheet has been made out, 80 that the directors and stockholders know just where they stand and ior what they are called upon to provide. Witt these important re- sults before them the bona side shareholders ot E would not ve likely to cavil at decals or to put forth msinuations calculated to impair the use/uiness of bhose to whom they owe the restora- tion of their property. Neither would tney be jound sneering at the amouit o: compensation paid to a president, LO Whose services they already We their rescue from serious vustuess embarrass- ments, the lewacy or the iruits o1 the Gould usurpation, and on whose experience and ability they reiy Jor substantial bepefits im the lavure, The jabortous ana dilticull duties tmposea on the president of the Brie road—dutes which few would cate and ewer are fitted tw discharge— deserve @ liberal compensation, Besides, it is well knoWN that the proiessions of economy ad- vanced in regard to the Erie presidency origi nate With those Who have plundered the treasury ol the company ina month of more than would cover the president's salary for twenty years. ‘The stockhoiders of the Erte road und the people who are interested in the eiciency of its service wean follow asaie role in estimating the value of criticisms Of 118 Inanagement. Suggestions calcu- Jated td assist the direction and to advance tne in- ferests of the road may be accepted as hoaestiy intended, Assaults, personalities, cavils and in- sinuations should be discarded a8 beariug too plainly wbe ear-marks of Gould. They are the means he employs to injure, aud, tf negessaty, to should be recognized as the work of the enemies of the road, and as such should nave po influence oU tue Minds Of those Wo are its iiends AMIOUS,
