Railroad and Government Bonds Firm. WALL Street, } Sarurpay, Dec. 20-6 P. M. After a holiaay business in Wall street is gene- rally without interest. To-day was not ap excep- tion to the rule, Business was ¢ and the changes made in prices were without import- ance. Some rumors obtained and one or two “points” were circulated which under livelier circumstances might add to the force of specula- tion; but, in the absence o! any strong sustaining power or of the work of cliques, prives generally maintained steadiness and jeft nothing to ve pre- @icted, There was some talk about a meeting in Lake Shore which would stow @ 3% per cent Gividend, and of a possibie movement in Western Union, but it 18 scarcely worta while to base calculations upon @ luture that is so likely to be unsettled or upon stocks that are notoriously the subject of sudden manipulation. In point of activity Lake Snore was the leading feature; Northwestern common foilowed, and then Western Union and Rock Island. New York Central was steady at 100% a 101, Erie at 26% a 27% a 27%. Why a larger sum is not reported is S question that has been asked in vain. It is fre- quently asked, without answer, where the millions have come {rom that have gone abroad. As the bank officers are caretul im their calculations it is not to be presumed that the coin has come from their vaults; out it is certainly strange that #80 much practical wealth is daily and weekly on- earthed without a record somewhere out of | steamship records aud newspaper reports. The legal tender average shows a decrease larger than was expected, for It is Known that the return of currency has been large, 1our out of five of the largest banks reporting receipts in excess of ship- | ments, Tne loss in total reserve 18 $990,700, and | an net reserve, or that in excess of legal require- ment, $536,150. WALL STREET NOTES. @HE OUTLOOK FOR THE NEW YEAR—THE OPINION OF EXPERTS—PROSPECTIVE ADVAN- TAGES—A TIMOROUS CONDITION IN STOCKS— GOLD STIFFER. Yesterday could not have been looked forward to as an active business day, It wasnot, At first there were considerable sales in the stock market wo realize, when later there seemed tu be a dispo- sition to cover outstanding shorts, Later the dis- position was manifest to do business on sellers’ options, MR, COX’S RESOLUTION has awakened the street to the desire of the knowledge he has asked for—viz., how much ac- tual coin each bank has in its vaults, how much It holds in the way of gold certificates and how much it holds in the way of paper of private parties representing gold deposits, In view of what was said previously in this column respecting the gold supply of this country, and the text of this paragraph, It is worth while to note what the Express of last night says of the bank statement :—‘The decrease in specie cannot be accounted for by the current movements of coim and bullion at tuis point.” ‘There is evidently something wrong here which, in the application of Mr. Cox's resolution, might obtain a solution, THE ‘FALLACY OF INFLATION. The following paragraph from the money article of an evening paper shows practically the utter folly of this inflation purpose:—‘in the money market call loans were 3 a 4 per cent, with 8% per cent as the ruling quotation. Prime mer- cantile paper ranged irom 5} 87 percent, Alead- ing and favorite argument of the inflation- ists is, that although money may be cheap and abundant enough in the Eastern cities it 18 scarce and hard to obtain in the West, conse- quently tbat section of the country peeds more currency. ‘lo show the Jallacy of this statement we have only to mention that, to our knowledge, @ banking Louse in this city offered lately to 18 numerous Western correspondents mouey freely, and tn sums to sult, on time at seven per cent in- terest, and was abie to lend but an insignificant amount, The reply in almost every instance was a decunation with thanks, and remarks to tue effect tuat money Was in ample supply at home.” Concerning A THE MERCANTILE SITUATION, the circular of McKillop, Sprague & Co., “commer- clal agents,” gives the loliowing summary, which, from such a source, is entitled Lo consiaeration, ‘This circular says:— Jn the beginning of the year the effects of the Beas failures aud resulting panic in the fall of 1873 were still felt. Distrust continued and many houses were under extension. some of which afterward falled. These suings, with the general depreciation of values, made the rst six monuhs or 1874 very generally unprofitable to our merchants. The second part or the year in many lines ot business, has, on the contrary, yielded profitable returns. ihe rootings of sales books may show a dimin- ished aggregate in rome cease, but the lact that goods are inuch reduced being borne in mind, it will be evident that the quantity gone into actual consumption during the past six months has becn a tair' average. In some sines prices are down to aute bellu rate, and this Must make the amount of saies compare more unfavor- ably than the quantity actually a0 ‘There can be no doubt that liquidation has been much more general than customary. Phts will to some extent account for the cheapness of inoney. It is not required to the same extent for the payment of business obliga- tions. It 1s also a tact that during the year economy has been practised to an unusua! extent “ So inuch has this been the case that probably not less than $400,000,00) may be pat down 4s ecomomized during the year. lake, the, the reduction in vatues— the reduction of indebt- edness, the amount economized—and add to these con- siderations the fact of goou crops for the pear, and the concluston js jnevitable—the couniry throughout is ina sound condition, dn view ot this it cannot be wrong to anticipate a gen. eral {mprovement in business for 1375. As the prospect mption of specie payment increases prudent wii begin at once to calculate values and profits by a specie standard, thus meeting the change 10 | aavance. When, therefore, gold aud our currency be come equalized, the transition wil, hardly create a rip- ple on the suriace of business. With the exception of the financial question we cun see little in the tuture which would justity dowot as to prospects tor business being good; and, a8 we have stated, we can see little danger trom that quarter, ihe experience of the pust ‘will no doubt teach merchants the wisdom of avoiding outside operations and overiradiny for the future, trom which causes many Jailures huve occurred, The ex- penses, however, of doing business in any of our large cites is much too great. The ‘ailures in 1874 will aggregate about the same in will be included to number as those of 1873; but in th many which more legitimate) houses which were weakene tall of that year. The number of these wouk ic uggregaie of 1874 below that of 1873, while the amount would be fess, and the actual Joss less sti! average, seek resief through the Bankrupt Ooart, not being able Ww induce creditors to accept the proffered compt i In every case ot this character with which we are ac- quainted the result has been heavy loss w creditors. ‘rhere 1s one provision of the Bankrupt act of which creditors have been slow to avail themselves, and yet its judicious use must enure to their benefit, We refer to that which enables creditors, under certain restrictions, to take an estate out of the court and place it in the hands of trustees chosen by themsclves. A settlement would entail less loss than one made by ing no interest aside from bills of . Frauds are still numerous, but not more so than usual. Against a large nuiber of these The Agency has protected its subscribers; but men resolved on fraud will suil find victims. ‘The Southern States, though suffering severely in some portions, have, on the whole, done well. More at- tention has been given to their grain crops, and as 4 result they are not now dependent dn others tor thetr breadstuffs. Another thing has worked to thelr advan- tage. At the beginnin; 2 of the year their credit was low as! uence 18 not only a reduction in the indebtedness of their merchants, but an unusually sound financial con- dition, though business with that section during the | year has not been profitable. In the West, though the fever of speculation con- tinnes, it is by lo means as severe as in past years. e business men are not generally s9 easity lod into the disposition to over trade in still too prevalent. ‘The survey of the whole, we tuink, justifies us In ex. Pressing satisfaction with the statis and prospects of asiness. Our position enables ts to look over ie com- mercial interests and movements of the entire coutry, and having dove so we herewith sabmit our conclu: ions, NEW YORK CITY.
