THE COURTS. A GAME OF FARO IN WHICH CLUBS WERE TRUMPS. Before Judge Morgan. The compliments of the season were exchanged by Judge Morgan atthe Fifty-seyenth street Po- Mice Court yesterday morning witn a large number of citizens, male and female. But they were un- gracious customers His Honor was called upon to receive, and Alderman Morris, who assisted at the reception, was anything but edified. Twelve men ere introduced by Captain McElwain, of the Twenty-first precinct, who very unceremoniously called them gamblers. It appears that a faro bank has been in full blast at No. 407 Fourth avenue ior nearly a year, but, for some unaccountable reason, the police of the Twenty-first precinct did not discover that fact until a few nighis ago, At half-past eleven o’clock on Saturday night the bank was declared open, and ten gentlemen, be- sides Joseph Winters, ‘the ruling spirit,’ and Birdsey Jackson, the “dealer,” sat down at vne green table. Tne cards were distributed and the play began, with $63 as the stakes. As the game was drawing to a close Captain McElwain, with a squad of men. entered the room, and as clubs thas became Srampe I he deciared the game to be his. He accordingly gathered in the stakes, and, pack- ing up all the yanibling implements be could find, invited the company to go with him to his hotel, where Ne would accommodate them for the night, The prisoners betng a bashiul set, the Court, on their behall, thanked the Captain for his kindness, Winters and Jackson were then held 1n bonds to appear for trial, while the others were discharged with a reprimand, THREE ATTEMPTS BY A WOMAN TO BUBN A TENEMENT HOUSE. Bridget Tierney was accused of making three attempts to burn the five story tenement No. 846 First avenue, her only cause being revenge against her landlord, Henry Eisner. It appeared irom the evidence of the case submitted to the Court by Fire Marshal Sheldon that Mrs, Tierney received Dotice on the 1st of December to move on the Ist oft January, because of non-payment of rent. She vowed that she would be revenged on the land- lord for his meanness, but no notice was taken of her threats at the time. A few nights ago fire was discovered in the celler 01 No. 850, in tie same block, Which is also owned by Mr. Kisuer., The oc- cupants put out the flames, and no more was thougot of the Matter until the ioliow- | ing night, when another fire broke out jn the same place, This ivoked suspi- cious, and no doust was then entertained that aD mMcendiary was at work. A watch was kept, but no further cuuse lor alarm Was given. On Saturday morning, beicre dayligat, lames and smoke were seen in an unoccupied rear room on the taird floor of No. 846, on the top floor of which livea Mrs, Tierney. On bursting in the door, which was locked, the Whole wantelpigce was fourd in flames and the room full of smoke. The fire was extinguished and word sent to the landlord. Be- | tore ois arrival Mrs, Mary Stiebing, occupying the rooms in the front, found the mantel on fire a sec- | ond time, and extinguished the flames, witu the assistance of the other tenants. Sie tuen kept watch on the room and on Mrs. Tierrey, whose movements that morning had attracted general attention. Ten minutes alter she saw through her bedroom window Mrs. Tierney on her hands and kuees near the mantel with @ bunch of ijighted watches, with whic she seemed endeavoring to set fire to something. Mrs Tierney alter coming out of the room. On being asked 1 the door of the room was locked, she said it was, but it was not, and Mrs. Suebing aod others immediately entered it, and jound a plece o: cloth saturated witb kerosene oil, papers aad other rubbish stuck in @ hole under the aman teland bucning away. Mrs. Tierney ou bein; cused of having set the place on fire denies the charge, but admitted that she had been in the room to search ior & ring that she had lost there during the excitement of the morning. There was sufficient in the evidence submitted, tue Court thought, to warrant the holding of tne ac- tis and she was committed for trial in default of bal THE LAW OF SELF-PRESERVATION VS. THE COM- MON LAW. It is not the first time and it will not be the last that a hungry stomach bas led a decent min into mischief, Henry Degnan, a respectable looking Jaboring man, was the victim this time, and he admitred having stolen a piece of lead pipe to — Dimselt with sometiuing to eat, he having een without food for wo days. ‘he Court said it was @ hard case, but could do nothing less than commit fim, The man considered he had done nothing wrong, and to brand bim a8 @ common tuler seemed ratuer cruel. THE ACCIDENT TO THE COLON. STATEMENT OF HER OFFCERS—HER PASSENGERS TO BE TRANSFERRED TO-DAY TO THE CITY OF TOKIO. Yesterday morning Mr. Rufus Hatch, Vice Prese ident of the Paciflo Mai Steamstip Company, ac- companiea by the company’s Superintendent, Mr. Bulay, embarked on board a tugboat to pay a visit Of inspection to their disabied vessel, the Colon, lying in mid-stream, ‘The passengers appeared to be enjoying @ very dull Sunday. Divine service had just been concluded a3 Messrs. Hatch and Bulay scrambled on board by means of a plank, covered with slippery snow. STATEMENT OF MR. RUFUS HATCH, None of the passengers kave left this ship, and we haye told them that they must consider them- selves as having already embarked on the voyage. ‘To-morrow (Monday) morning they will be trans- ferred to the steamer City of Tokio, lying out io the stream, which will take them to Aspinwall, and this will be the only trouble they will be pat to, Their baggage will be transferred at daylight, and also the provisions taken on board the Colon. We hope to despatch the City of Tokio at about one o'clock. We had intended to send her directly to San Francisco, but this misbap to the Colon wilt cause her voyage to that city to be about a week longer than it otherwise would bave been, The passengers on the ity of Tokio only number about a dozen, and those we are transferring from the Coion are aboat 200 in ou: ber, say seventy cain and 130 steerage, They a: ali in luck, I think, to have the chance ol travel ling by the finest and fastest ocean steamer afloat, The Colon will discharge all her cargo, except about 800 tons, and will then proceed to the dry dock at the foot of Pike street. We think that the cost of the repairs will be about $5,000. I have telegraphed to Aspinwall tor (he steamer Heary Chauncey to wait there and take the place of the Colon for the returu voyage to this city. Upon arrival at Aspinwail of the City of Tokio, her pas- Bengers for the Pacific coast will be tranferred as Panama on board the tution, ‘The coal barge sunk was Jaden with coal for Mr. Yeoman, a@coal merchant. I cannot tell you at present if ‘We siiail commence any lawsuit against the owner of the barge. Our next steamer due here is the | Acapuico. STATEMENT OF CAPTAIN Z. L. TANNER, Captain Tanner, of the United States Navy, and commander of the Colon, made the Jollowing statement :— At a quarter to twelve A. M., while turning over the engines preparatory to starting, the propeller was jouled by a Coal liguter, whicn broke adrift from the north side of pier 41. Stopped the engine immediately, cleared the lignter and hauled her ulongside the buikhead, where she sunk. The chiel engineer reported that one length of the shalt, which 18 mace in sections and bolted to- gether, was fractured. We tien came to an an- ‘Yae watcher ran out ito the uallway and met | Chor in the stream and sent jor a diver, Woo came off at about jour o’clock and examined the pro- pelier. He ‘ound the biades broken. Mr. Hatch was called upon again late inthe evening and stated tnat he bad received no fur- ther particulars of the loss of the Japan, but he had no doubt that sbe was burned as reported. Although he had no definite information, ne was Of the opinion that the loss of life was greatly ex. aggerated, THE GLENDENNING SCANDAL, THE MODERATOR REFUSES TO PRONOUNCE JUDG. MENT, Despite the snowstorm yesterday morning the } Church of the Scanaal, Jersey City, was well at tended. Mr. Glendenning occupied a seat im the boay of the church, but the Rev. Mr, Moore waa absent, Tue Moderator opened the services by offering @ prayer, in which he called on God to guide their distressed church to a right choice in their pe culiar troubles. He invoked the Holy Spirit to guide oll their actions, and especially those of their pastor, that he might do right, and be wilk ing to be, do and suffer in the cause of Christ. Belore announcing the text the Moderator | said:—As you are aware, lam here to-day by order ot the Presbytery of Jersey City to ofMicially pro- nounce the judgment of that Presbytery upon the pastor of this church, But, inasmuch as your pas- tor has placed in my nands, as Moderator, an ap- peal from that judgment, and as ther 'e certain cases, of which this 48 Not one, Where an appeal does not operate a8 # suspension of judgment, [ Tegard this appeal as preventing me [rom taking further action, 1 theretore aostain irom officially pronouncing that judgment, ‘the Moderator preached from Job, xxXxiv., 29— “When He giveth qutetness who then can make trouble, and when He hideth His iace who then cau behold Him, whether it be done against a na- tion or against a man only.” God makes His people superior to the cares and perplexities of jue, He does not releve them from troubles, but Hie strengthens them with a grace that enables them to sustain those troubles. The latter clause Of the text reiers to those from waom God hideth fils face. Examples of ialse peace among sinnera are to be found in every congregation, Such per- s0n8 are found ip churca on Sundays, Their peace is an absence of ail peace or thought on the great. subjects waich the Bible reveais, Alter the sermon the choir intoned the hymna, “Nearer my God to Thee.” The Moderator then gave the benediction and the services closed. Mr. Glendenning bad @ conterence with some of those in the congregation, who still adhere to his ior- tunes and desire to retain him as pastor. He an- nounces that he will occupy the pulpit on Wednesday evening and also on Sunday, and those who know him best have not the slightest doubt he will Keep his word. .He was all siniles and cheerfulness over the action of the Moderator GOY. TILDEN'S STAF APPOINTMENTS. We published yesterday an incomplete lst of the appointments made by Governor elect Tiaen on tis multary stam, The Albany Evening Journal remarks in this connection :— In addition to these names, one or two others have been determined upon which we are not et at liberty to mention, A position on the sta® $ also been tendered to the son of Mr. August mont, of New York. The appointment of Com- missary General of Ordnance requires the con- firmation ot the Senate—the only one of the staff tuat does—and while the republican majority of that body will undoubtedly ve disposed to defer to tae Governor in a matzer so personal to himself as lis staff, it will, of course, do itself the justice of exatainiug ail tominations, ‘This position is a constitutional ollice, and the term does not exp1 till February 25. We aagunte, therefore, that the Pi, pia in anticipa- on Of the appointment ti made. The delay tu the Soup on of Pte staf arises from the tumense presaure for pee ene the re it embarrassment under which Ly finds timselt tn selecting from che ares number of applications, He is overwhelmed with candl- dates, Tne rush for plumes and epaulets has never been anything like it Our domocratio iriends are ail just dow ambitious to be soldiers. ‘The new Governor will be compeiled to disappoint many; butin order fo cre all he can be U4 determined to enlarge the number o1 his aida. ‘The law does not limit tue number, and the Gov- ernor finds it.easier to spread out the retinue. in view of this determination it 1s expected that the proposed number of staf omcers for Albany will be enlarged, and that Erastus Corning, diy Will probably be ‘appointed an aid,
