THE VICKSBORG INVASION, A Negro Mob of Two Hundred and Fifty En- gaged by the Citizens and Repulsed. Short, Sharp and Sanguinary Skirmishing. The Captured Negroes Lay the Respon- sibility on Sheriff Crosby. (From the Vicksbarg Herald, Dec. 9.) At was reported Sunday afternoon that courtiers were golng through the country in the neighbor- bood of the city, notifying the negroes to rendez- vous at cettain poinis, for the purpose of march- fmg on the city and reinstating Peter Urosby in the Sherif’s office, ana that the negroes were gathering that afternoon at Hickory Tree, Bovina and other points. There have been so many ru- mors, however, that very few placed any credence | 1B this; yet the citizens put men on the watch to give warning of the first appearance of the enemy. About three o’clock yesterday morning an alarm Was sounded trom the Court House, and many cit- Igens hastened to that place, but as there waa NO IMMEDIATE DANGER, Petired to their homes, About fve o'clock the Blarm was again sounded, and the citizen soldiery egeion gathered insmail numbers, About nine O'clock, however, the Court House and fire bells Yang out ageneral alarm, and from mouth to Mmouth—from one to another—all over the city went the intelligence that the negroes in armed bodies were advancing on the city from several fiirections. Immediately in every street, from aimost every house, armed men hurried to the Court House, and tn half an hour a company of about 100 men, under the command of Colonel orace Miller, marched out Grove street and MET THE NEGROES ‘Inside the city limits, at a bridge near Point Look- out, under command of Andrew Owens. Colonel ‘Millsr ordered a halt and himself rode forward and advised the negroes to disperse. He warned them that they were violating the law and unleas they dispersed to their homes the consequences might besevere, Owens roplied that he was there with his fullowers in response to orders trom Urosby and would only disperse at Crosby’s orders. Owens was then permitted to visit Crosby, who was.under guard at the Court House, and returned vo bis men with orders trom Crosby to retire to their homes. This they apparently consented to do, but as the whites were retiring to their com- mand the negroes Genantiy announced that they had come there jor a fight and were going to have it. FIRING THEN COMMENCED on both sides, the negroes fleeing after the first few rounds, followed up by the cltizens with desultory fire, Six or seven negroes were killed In this skirmien, about as many wounded and fil- teen or twenty taken prisoners. This body of “In- vaders’’ having been dispersed, Colunel Miller’s command returned to the Court House. A little past ten o’clock a heavy body of armed negroes was reported on the Jackson road, near the Pemberton monument, and @ detachment of ae citizen soldiery was despatched thitner, and ere THE MOST SANGUINARY ENGAGEMENT be the day occurred. The negroes were encoun- strongly entrenched in the old federal br tworks, just under the brow of the hill im- mediately this side of the Pemberton monument. The citizens opened a skirmish fire upon them, which was kept up for more than halt an hour, without any effect on either side. While this ekir- mishing was. going on Captain John Hogan, with several white men irom the neignoorhood of der’s Bluff, en route tor the city, came up on the Sppoaie Side of the hill, and were fired upon from ambush. Mr. Oliver Brown, @ son-in-law of har. Spyuer, was shot through the head and almost instantly killed. Captuin Hogan’s cone pany and the citizens then made a _ ter- rifle charge upon the negroes, who took rejuge in @ canebrake, alter ‘a short and bloody fight. About twenty- -flve of the poor @upes and wretches were killed and wounded here. After their first volley upon Captain Hogan’s company they fired wildly, and though their loss was heavy, no other casualty was re- Ported on the side of the whites. bout the same time that the troops were sent | ous Jackson road another detachment of two com- Panies was sent OUT CHBRRY STAEET to meet a body of nearves approaching from that direction. The negroes Were jound in consider- ableforce just south of the city, and while one company advanced in front the other made a detour to tne right, anda third company, which had gone out tie Yazoo Valley road and made the balf cireutt around the city. came up on the left flank, and with a yell the three companies charged, the negroes, aiter a ew shots, scampering as as their legs could carry them. ‘they were Jol- lowed by the cavalry for some distance, and ut- terly routed. Numerous different bodies of negroes were dis- persed on other roads by tne cavalry, and by nalf- past eleven o'clock scouts reported the negroes Touted from ail thelr positions. A piece of artil- lery was out, but its big-tuouthed talk was not re- eyed to convince the negroes that it Was a bad lay to capture a city. ‘There were reports in the afternoon that the negroes, in retiring to the country, were depre- dating and buraing housed, but not! ing authentic could be heard, IN THE CITY. Intense excitement prevailed tn the city during the morning, and business of every king was cn- | turely suspended. The gun and ammanition stores | were besieged ior arms and were abou: the only | houses open, At dark pearly all the citizens nad retired to their homes, only a suiticient numoer being still under arms to guard whe city. A meeting of the citizens was held last evening, at which the /ollowing resolution was adopted :— Resolved, That while we are fully satisfied that Peter Crosby has caused armed nevroes arch on the city, and should therefore be held mainly responsible tor all the blood that has been shed, we recommend all wood Citizens to abstain from inflicting any personal violence upon him, and that we use still further efforts to have him removed from office in some legal manner. A REPUBLICAN OPINION. The Times (republican) of yesterday afternoon concludes 118 account of the conflict as follows:— Proce tee instigated thi p povement and induced the orant negroes of the rural districts to suppose Tac they could march mnto and take possession of the town, should be held to an account for it, and we hope that, sooner or Iater, the real offenders will be sited out. One'fact is, that there was not a single town darky in any one of the three divisions which inade attacks. Where it willend is ® question which puzzles the mind of the oldest citizen. THE KANSAS BRIGANDS. Kansas City, Mo., Dec, 9, 1874, Your correspondent was awaiting the arrival of a@ friend at the Union depos in this city last even- ing when the Kansas Pacific train came tn with the somewhat startling, though not altogether novel, announcement that it had been stopped and robbed by five masked men at a small station called Muncie, u few miles west in Kansas. To until to-morrow, at tw Mopar, Dee, 7, 1874. obtain the correct particulars I went this morning Hl to Muncie and interviewed the leading inhab- itants. The railroad runs along the Kansas River bottoms, and jost at the station is crossed by a wagon road, which leads up a bluff and round to Wyandotte and otner points in Kansas, The owner of the store of the village is an intelligent Man, named John Purtee, and he states thatat hall-past'three in the aiternoon five men rode up the track from the direction of Kansas City. ‘They were heavily armed, each one carrying a rifle or caroine. Hitching their horses up, they went into the store, emptied Purtee’s till, con- taming $24, and, with the threat of a loaded pis- tol, ordered him to be qniet. The five men then | masked Foemnelves. y blocked the line and flagged the station. They also captured a young farmer named Reuben Oliver, who was riding a rather good mare, and ordered him to dismount. The Mare they kept, and taking the sorriest horse of their own, proceeded to shoot it, firing some eight or ten shots into it before it fell dow: wagon containing women and calidren wat captured, altoget! twents-five persons being guarded by five bold ana desperate men. True to time, the Kansas express run up a little before four o’clock, and, of course, stopped on seeing the flag. One of the robbers BOARDED THE ENGINE, | and, “with nis little the passenger cal it was blocked. Webster lied tne engl- express irom and run up the line to where Two of the men then went ior (Wells, Fargo & Co.'s Express mes- senger), one covering him with a_ rifle and the other with a revolver. Under this powerful persuasion, Webster opened the treasure chest, from which the rascals took $25.000 in greenbacks, $4,000 in gold dust and pus miscellaneous valuable papers. While this ‘as going on, some lively firing took place at the conductor, Brinkenhof, who was making his way back to fag a freight train, following in the rear. Brinkenhoff was brought to a halt, though unin- jured, but on learning that his errand was one of mercy the robbers allowea him to proceed.
