FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL An Unsettled Condition in the Stock Market. GOLD FIRM-11 5-8, Covernufénts, Railroad and Southern Bonds Generally Steady, Monpay, De Dee. bar 7a The opening of the market was not attended by the development of new features, The same bid speculative influences tnat have prevailed were again in active force, and the street wit- ‘nessed a depression here and a rise there that at the close left almost every one in the dark with reference to near results. The bearish attempts ‘Of the day were persistent and weil maintained, ‘but whether they iully accorded with the purposes Of their projectors remains to be established. A Suspicion prevails that those who are accredited ‘with the depression of stocks are them- 14 Belyes secret buyers, being already assured | that the general commerce of the coun- try 18 everywhere improving, and must by sympathy advance even the speculative Values o1 the Stock Exchange. For many weeks ‘there have been experienced a series of sudden nd sharp reactions, but when traced to general causes they invariably fud explanation in the ab- sence of speculative funds—for whe panic ab- stracted scores of millions irom active use—in the caution tuat attaches to the ventures of outside speculators, and in the poverty of those who, Operating locally as members of the board, are frightened by changes that exceed the vulgar fractions of ope per cent, There are still left, however, A FEW BOLD MEN with capital, who do not readily succumb to an- tagonistic influences and who have Jaith and pa- tence in whatever side of the market they es- Pouse, and who, by their personal influence, con- versation and example, silently contribute in giving character to tne temporary situation. In the face of exisung facts tt would be clearly un- wise to prognosticate concerning the immediate future—to say that one class of operators are Selling and looking for lower prices, or that an- Other class are buying and waiting for improve- ment, on which they count as one of tne elements | of recuperation throughout the country. Whether Western Union, Lake Shore, Erle, Pacific Mall, Union Pacific, Northwestern, Wabash or any other stock advances or declines 1g a question that, for the moment, must be determined by the specu- lators of the hour. The steady investor, however, ‘bases his calculations, especially with reterence to the cheap stocks, upon premises of his own, and is Not apt to be dismayed by figures which his expe- -Tience has frequently taught bim during the last ten months suddenly react from the most threat- ening to the most promising attitude. In brief, the stock market is in that condition in which the operator must personally draw his own toferences concerning cxis‘ing facts, and determine by the character of bis bank account and his transactions how long he can afford to wait for profit. THE DEALINGS ON THE STOCK EXCHANGE to-day amounted to 125,000 shares, of which the éubjoined table exhibits the principal dealings:— New.
