The Bridge Between Earth and Heaven. Plymouth lecture room was even more crowded than usual last evening. After the usual exer- cises Mr. Beecher said:—It would be extraordi- nary to say that heaven would not be so useful! when we get there as it 1s while we are here; and yet if we did say so there would be truth in it. Whatever may be that estate, and we have but little knowledge, we are left without any doubt that we will meet with transcendent sympathy, and compassion, that we will be in the society of just men made perfect, the con- dition in which we are by moral sensibility lifted into intimate communion with God. In the other life we come into connection, not with that which is unchangeable, but with that which has no relation to anythingelse. Now, to hold heaven up as the antithesis of hell, as the only, way to escape being scorched, 1s a low, coarse, un- cultivated idea, We think of heaven often as & rejuge for the inquietudes and disturbances of this life, and to a certain extent it Is fj ht, pug Jet us try to keep before ts continually this last rest of the spirit, this home of the soul, by living in the presence of it every day; let feel that we shall reach there a condition of true sympathy and manhood, a condition that’ 18 wholly joyful in the noblest associations, a con- dition which Xf shall meet God face to face hd havé the ééndofodsness that we are like Him.) Live in this thought and the living will not be oo hard, The great object of Divine Providence Is t build manhood in us, the apostle says. Let every one of us please his neighvor. Let the’ whoie spirit and effiaence of life be to create hap- piness in your neighbor for his good, his perma- hent good; and in the constant thought of the life to come, When We meet with sorrows and dificul- tles here, we should think not how soon shall I get over these troubles and get to aoe ak but’ how shall { bear this trial, 80 as to be fit for heaven? There is @ great difference in these states of mind, joblesse oblige” is a great, proverb, Now there are a great many things we’ pught todo because we are heirs of heaven. Wo belong to. the company of the Redeemer. Say, “E re the child of Han vers Pattie, ond i] ened Ae aw olng back a a Zion seiore God I will not be found unworthy.’? Now in this life we undertake to vindicate our pride; we undertake to vinilicate our vanity and affection. Live with this thought. How shall seem better to my God how shall I be deeper, sweeter, truer, purer, more 1ull of honor; how shall I seek to be more a man ? It don’t make any difference if we don’t see how itis going to end, Children are very much inter- tated in the building of this bridge, ana in after years they will honor those who have built it for the great work they have done. | feel a strange interest init myself. | look at it every day, and £ see one tower done and on the other side one ts going up, and I say to myself, my tower is goue up and I can see it and I know there ts one going up on the other side, though I cannot see it, a mate to this, and before long there will be stretched across a wire, and I say that our sor- rows and trials are wires God is stretching acros@ the river of death, and 1 shall go on the other sida out of the noise and dust. What | want is to keep the other side so near me as to determine this Side, to be patient, sweet, gentle and full of faith, live a8 that heaven shail drop down its views on the barrenness ot this life. So viewing heaven life is not very hard, - After the prayer meeting there was the annua Meeting of the church for the election of oMicera lor the coming vear.
