FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL | Stocks Strong and a Better Feeling in the Market. Gold 110 7-8 and Ul 1-4—Further Gains by the Bank of England. Government, State and Railroad Bonds Steady. WALL STREET, H TuuRspaY, Dec. 10—6 P. M. Wall street to-day hag obeyed another of the strange, Mysterious influences which sometimes suddenly operate upon the market, and make prices that could not hawe been anticipated. Stocks have advanced and command higher figures. Temporarily a bduilisn feeling has becn ‘established, something has given encouragement ‘to the majority of operators, and they seem to ‘have taken hold of stocks to move them upward, Prices at the end showing the effect of more than usual animation and a favorable undertone. It remains to be seen, however, whether the recovery ‘Tecorded ts the work of a purpose to put figures digher or ts only a brief furry caused by specu- -latord to enabie them to continue the process of Unloading. lt is out fair to state that the temper ‘of the street 1s very uneven with reference to the future of stocks, and that slight evidences of weakness cause quick sales. Those who are ‘dong,’ as well as those who are “short’’ of stocks, are anxious, and with much anttcipation both parties seek the promptest protection. It is this unsettled view of the market that has compelled recent frequent reference in this column, to what ‘wMay be best described as ‘‘a feverish condition.” Unlike Englishmen or Frenchmen, who operate on their respective Exchanges, and, more or less, form judgment from general commercial facts, the American jumps at conclusions in a moment, ‘changes his purposes every nour and adapts him- self to the magnetic influence of a crowd. A strong or weak market, therefore, in the absenco of general influences, means nothing more than personal or chgque manipulation, and ts not calculated to attract‘as permanent ad- Rerents to one or the other side the large outer element who in old times were wont to enter ‘Wall street and leave commisstons that adacd materially to the bank account of the many ‘brokers. THE RANGE OF STOCKS ‘to-day was as follows:—Western Unton advanced from 82%; to 833, closing at 83; Lake Shore from 803 to 80%, With large sales between these fig- | ‘ares, Northwestern common moved from 46% to 4734, and large blocks also changed handa. Pacitic Mail sold at 89% a 40%. Erie fell off to 26 carly in | the Gay, but recovered to 27%, the strength being principally due to the appointment of a recetver for the Atlantic and Great Western, which practi- eally relieves the corporation, as was said to-day, from @ heavy incubus. A ramor also prevailed | shat the Grand Opera House had been sold to A. | ‘T. Btewart. Wabash sold at 30% a 80%; Ohio and Mississippi at 31% a 31% ; Rock Island was steady at 101% 2 101%; Unien Pacific at 35 a 85% & 8544; Northwest preferred, closed at 61%, and St. Pau! preferred at 5734. THE SALES. The transactions to-day amounted to 149,000 shares, 8 large portion of which were sold just before the close. TnuRspay, Dec. 10-6 P. M. Corron.—The market for spot cotton was dull and depressed. Exporters generally were still out of the market, The sales below reported for ex- ports were made to Gill pre-engaged freight or limits left standing, which the recent let-down in prices just enabled exporters to fill.
