WY aS seumnamenenewamantieceine ANUIHER TWEED SCARE. ——_>+-—_—— ‘WRamored Eneape of the Ex-Boss—Biack- well’« Island invaded by a Force of Arwed Police—Mysterious Faise Signal ‘and Break in the Communication, Ever since the rumored escape of Tweed from ‘is island home the authorities have been the very embodiment of watchfulness lest rumor shouid be but the forerunner of reality. No better illustra. ton of this fact could be given than the intense excitement caused at a late hour last night by the repetition of the report of the noted crimmal’s escape. So alarming and apparently wellfounded was the ews considered that it was firmly believed for a long time by men not prone — to Maghts of imagination that not only nad Tweed | ewoaped, but half the convicts on Blackwell's Wusnd bad followed suit, It came about as fol- feria HOW THE REPORT ORIGINATED. Atexactly ball-past mine o'clock last night, as "whe bookkeeper of the Commissioners of Chan- ‘ues and Correction, Mr. Hedden, was preparing “to leave his office, he Beard the ominous signal on the telegraph line, as it came irom the Peniten- uary on Blackweil’s Island, 444,” which, Uraos- jaed, means, “Send a section of police imme- | diately; great danger.” This if the most amportant signalin the entire list, and 1s never | transmitted except in cases of extreme peril, The | siarming communication was addressed to the Nineteenth precinct station honss, out the same ‘wire running into the Commissioner's «Mice the signal was simultaneously recorded at the latter wplace. Mr, Hedd@en rushed to the te!egraph key to ask for particulars, but hardly had his fingers | ene ‘touched the instrument when snap went the wire. | The current of communication was broken. After waiting in breathiess amxiety for ten min- utes, the operator ran in hot Baste to the resi dence of Commissioner Laimbeer with the start- lung formation that prisoners were escaping frum Biackweil’s Island. In a twinkling Mr. Laimbeer comprehended the situation, and, jumping into @ carriage, drove rapidly to the uty-ninth street station house, Arrived there he wterrogated the sergeant about the signal, but the latter knew nothing, save the fact that just as he ‘was about to respond to the Penitentiary cai! the telegraph ceased to work. “Quick! a section of men to Fifty-second street and first avenue,” ordered the Commissioner, and in less than five minutes a dozen policemen were running at tui speed toward the foint named. At this juncture a HERALD reporter happened on the Scene, and, learning the above facts, joined tne aficers, WhO never stopped running unui they reached the row boat in waiting at the foot of Fiity-second street, East River. As many as it Would hoid at once jumped 1m, the re; aged among the nuimver, and the boatman plied oars with & vigor Worthy the occasion. The night was aark and gloomy, just the evening on which to ATTEMPT AN ESCAPE, Each poticeman instantly felt for bis revolver, examined the same and made up bis mind lor a desperate encounter. Every man of them be- heved that Tweed had escaped. Landed on the Island, tne party rushed to the Warden’s office, where they found Commissioner Laimbeer awaiting their arrival. Joining the Commissioner the HERALD Man pro- ceeded to find Waiden Liscomb, from whom It was ascertained that no signal of danger had Mtentionally been sent. It was all a mistake. He could not, however, account for the mysterious break of all of the wires, He assured the Commissioner that the ex-Boss was soundly sieeping in his bed. On learning this Mr. mbeer returned to the boat and re-embarked for the city, only to find, on his arrival at the New | York side, more breathless policemen anxiously awaiting transportation to the Island.
