* total reserve and the total liabilities :— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Western Stocks Coming to the ‘Front. GOLD ADVANCING—112 18. The Bank Statement—Money Mov- ing West and South, BONDS IN GOOD DEMAND. WALL Srazer, Sarumpay, Nov. 2 8 PM} In the stock market fresh interest appears to have been concentrated upon certain Western lines, and & Movement in stocks heretofore com- paratively stagnant {is noticeable. Northwest common and St, Paul occapied a prominent place in the deliberations of the day, and their sudden strength disturbed meny calculations, Western buyers are said to pe im the market. and to be taking advantage of what they coneeive to be low prices, Outside of this element it may be added that the undertone fs decidedly “bullish” so far as these Weatern jines are concerned, and that the near future 1s regarded as full of promise for this class of securities. Yet it 18 not im- Proper to observe that the recent advance is evidently under the control of speculative ma- cbinery and that just as the lever moves so will prices respond, In short, there is no legitimate cause for, and nothing natural in, the improve- ‘ment which has been marked. The report this week is strongly suggestive of the movement of the currency to which reference bas lately been made in this column, and is ex- pianatory of the uses of money elsewhere in the manipulation of crops. The West and South are temporarily employing what is now marked as a deficit. in other words, currency is on its annual tour,,and, all things being considered, it is not likely to return without profit. We note a de- crease in the excess above legal reserve of $3,107,0c0. Most of this sum is represented by legal tenders. The specie shipments apparently -are not yet felt, as they do not materially enter into the general average. So much Interest attaches to the future of gold ‘that it is not surprising that the price to-day ad- vanced to 1124, with strong closing figures at 112, The explanation for this course has heretofore been given in this columa. The advance is evidently not artificial It is evideatly obedient to certain gatural causes, which, while they may not be satisiactorily ana- dyzed, nevertheless lead up to contingencies for which preparation has yet tobe made, The opening price to-day was 111%;; the close, 112, The rates paid for carrying were from 1 to 8 per cent and for borrowing “flat.” The specie snip- ments to-day amounted to $550,000, of which $300,000 was in gold coin, the remainder in sliver.
